Full Title: Considerations sur L'Ordre de Cincinnatus ou Imitation D'un pamphlet Anglo-Americain. Suivies De plusieurs Pieces relatives a cette Institution; D'une Lettre signee du General Washington accompagnee de Remarques par l'Auteur Francois; D'une Lettre de feu M. Turgot Ministre d'Etat en France au Docteur Price sur les Legislations Americaines; & de la Traduction d'un Pamphlet du Docteur Price intitule: Observations on the importance of the American Revolution and the means of making it a benefit to the world; accompagnee de Reflexions & de Notes du Traducteur. Howes M 653. This is an enlarged edition of a work first published in 1784. It is based on a pamphlet entitled "Considerations on the Society or Order of Cincinnatus" issued in 1783 at Philadelphia. The original pamphlet was signed "Cassius" and is supposed to have been written by Edanus Burke though some give Sebastien Roch Nicholas Chamfort as a joint author. The notes on Price's very important 'Observations' were largely the work of Guy Jean Baptiste Target 1733-1806. The hereditary and quasi-aristocratic character of the Revolutionary War veterans' Society of the Cincinnati was strongly opposed by Franklin and others. Franklin was unable due to his sensitive political and diplomatic roles to attack the organization directly. Apparently "he engaged two of his friends Chamfort and the young Mirabeau to translate an American attack upon the Society Aedanus Burke's Considerations on the Society or Order of Cincinnatus and to incorporate into the translation an essay in letter form that Franklin had himself written to his daughter which demonstrated mathematically the absurdity and moral and social evil of aristocracy or "descending honor." Mirabeau's book Considerations sur l'Ordre de Cincinnatus published in London in 1784 through the efforts of Franklin and later translated into English created a great furor for it attacked an organization headed by such respectable figures as Washington Lafayette and Rochambeau and at the same time struck convincingly and cleverly at the foundations of the existing French social order." - Echeverria Mirage in the West pp. 56-57. This enlarged edition includes a French translation of Price's book and Mirabeau's comments on it. It includes details which did not appear in the English version and is an important document in the history of the Revolutionary War era. RARE. PRICE JUST REDUCED FR-VOYAGES Language: eng. Notes: Honoré Gabriel Riqueti comte de Mirabeau 9 March 1749 – 2 April 1791 was a French revolutionary as well as a writer diplomat freemason journalist and French politician at the same time. He was a popular orator and statesman. During the French Revolution he was a moderate favoring a constitutional monarchy built on the model of Great Britain. He unsuccessfully conducted secret negotiations with the French monarchy in an effort to reconcile it with the Revolution. In the years leading up to the Revolution he communicated with Benjamin Franklin and Thomas Jefferson—who served successively as United States Ministers to France in that period—and used materials provided directly by each of them in several of his pre-Revolution publications.

After a preliminary trip to Berlin in early 1786 he was dispatched that July on a mission to the royal court of Prussia; returning in January Mirabeau published a full account in his Secret History of the Court of Berlin 1787.10 This account denounced the Prussian court as scandalous and corrupt described the King of Prussia as weak and overly emotional and labeled Prince Henry of Prussia brother of Frederick the Great and a guest of the French court as narrow-minded and incompetent. The resulting uproar was an extreme embarrassment for the French government which quickly censored the book but could not prevent its widespread notoriety. Mirabeau's episode provided inspiration to many more radical publishers who came to regard Mirabeau as a leader of the coming revolution.11
Size: 4to: 160mm x 230mm Illustration: Illustrated with a color frontispiece. Internally very good slight tanning to a few pages. Honore Gabriel Riqueti comte de Mirabeau 1749-1791 was President of the National Assembly of France. Mirabeau was imprisoned intermittently after an altercation with a nobleman from 1774 until 1782. He was able to gain his freedom and defeat an impending death sentence through his oratory and legal acumen. This work An Essay on Despotism first published in 1775 helped establish Mirabeau as a powerful critic of the old regime. "Du fond d'un cachot le genie de la Revolution Mirabeau lance l'anatheme au despotisme et reduit celui qui se croit roi simplement parce qu'il est fils de roi a la condition d'un salarie que ses sujets peuvent remercier brutalement de ses services." Ch.L. Chassin. He was also an associate of the American Ambassador Benjamin Franklin and Thomas Jefferson who provided him with American pro-liberty pamphlets. Mirabeau played an import role in draft the 1789 "Declaration of the Rights of Man". As the revolution became increasingly radical Mirabeau attempted to divert it to a more moderate course in the mold of England's constitutional monarchy. His death in 1791 allowed for the more extreme elements of the revolution Robespierre to come to greater prominence.
