1767164209The Hague: chez les Libraires associés 1767. Handbook of Physiocracy including the Tableau économique First edition of Mirabeau's own abridgement of his and Quesnay's Philosophie rurale 1763 the first textbook of the physiocratic school. The Philosophie rurale presented "perhaps the most complete and magisterial account of the views of the Physiocratic school" Higgs p. 57. The Eléméns condenses the work into a more manageable textbook format aiming at a broader dissemination and understanding of the system. Importantly the Eléméns contains as a folding plate the Tableau économique first published in 1758 in a minute number of copies and reproduced in Mirabeau's L'Ami des hommes in 1760 and in the Philosophie rurale. The Tableau économique is cited as the earliest attempt to visualize a comprehensive model of the economic system illustrating the flow of goods and money and the interdependence of the agricultural manufacturing and commercial sectors. It is credited as "the most important and famous work of Physiocracy and has often been regarded as a summary of the entire corpus of Physiocratic economics" New Palgrave IV p. 23. Provenance: 19th-century bookplate of Isaac Iselin to the front pastedown; 20th-century note of authorship to front free endpaper; half-title with 20th-century library stamps of the Basel section of Schweiz Vereinigung für Sozialpolitik noted as bequeathed by the Austrian labour economist Stephan Bauer 1865-1934 and of the political science seminar of the University of Basel. Duodecimo 162 x 89 mm. Engraved folding Tableau économique at rear. Contemporary vellum spine lettered in gilt red sprinkled edges. Slight browning half-title loosening a little short closed tear to inner margin of table. A very good copy. Einaudi 3948; Goldsmiths' 10275; Higgs 3977; INED 3197; Kress 6477. Not in OCLC. Erotika Biblion 1783 is a book by Comte de Mirabeau first published pseudonymously a Rome de l'Imprimerie du Vatican in 1783. The biblion in the title refers to "book" in general and the bible in particular. The book laments the fact that during the translation of the bible the sexual practices dating from Antiquity related in the Old Testament were translated using euphemistic language. It also treats the concept of elective affinities bible studies and bible translation effluvia sympathism; and mentions the obscure 17th century astronomer Jeremy Shakerley.Henry Marchand in The Erotic History of France calls it one of "the strangest books ever written." Marchand further notes that "the whole edition of this work was confiscated immediately so that only fourteen copies of it are extant today. It was naturally placed on the Index too under the title of Amatoria Bibliorum. Subsequent editions met the same fate but the book has reproduced itself."MIRABEAU – EROTIKA BIBLION. A few brown spots on the title page of La Prise des annonciades. Illustrated with a vignette on the title page of Errotika. Collection written by Mirabeau imprisoned in Vincennes at the same time as the Marquis de Sade. Various curiosities are culled from ancient writings relating to sexual practices such as onanism tribalism sodomy nymphomania etc. : ""The author in addition to the talent of perfectly mastering ancient languages writes very well in his own joking lightly and often drawing on Voltaire's style: in the very dirty pictures he sometimes presents he always uses honest or technical expressions: besides he seems well versed in the art of voluptuousness"" contemporary 18th century review quoted in Gay-Lem. II 151. According to the legend the book was relentlessly censored by the authorities and only fourteen copies of the first edition had survived - an estimate which seems to be quite inaccurate. After a second edition in 1792 the book was prohibited and included in the papal index. Another edition was destroyed in 1826 by the Royal Court of Paris and two further prosecutions were brought in 1856 and 1868 for ""outrage à la morale publique et aux bonnes murs"". The text was notably published by Guillaume Apollinaire along with other writings by Mirabeau in his 1910 edition in the Bibliothèque des Curieux series. De l'imprimerie du Vatican hardcover

1783001533
Imprimerie du Vatican 1783. 1st Edition . Hardcover. Very Good. 32mo 5x 3.1inches pp263. Hardcover issued without dust jacket. Binding of black letter spine with decorative gilt titles over black boards in very good condition with some rubbing to edges. Inside all pages in very good condition with a little toning and the very odd spot of foxing. The book is in 11 parts each dealing with different sexual practices or perversions with titles in Hebrew or Greek: Anagogy; Anelytroid; Ischa; Toproid; Thalaba sodomy; Anandryne female homosexuality; Akropody circumcision; Kadhesch; Behemah bestiality; Anoscopy; Linguanmania nymphomania. Mirabeau wrote and published this work whilst imprisoned and sentenced to death for seduction during which time he met the Marquis de Sade who was also writing erotic works; however the two disliked each other intensely. The book was immediately banned and copies destroyed but the authorities could not stop the work being widely circulated. The preface of this copy states " 2 other manuscripts which have the same merit and which are both interesting; they will be completed to print within 2 months". An excellent copy of this notorious work from an equally notorious author. Very scare indeed.

Imprimerie du Vatican hardcover
