He began an affair with a woman named Sophie better known as Marie Therese de Monnier. They fell in love but Mirabeau was already on the run from the law due to an altercation over a different woman.In 1777 Mirabeau was caught arrested and imprisoned and began writing the erotic letters to Sophie that are translated in this volume and were widely published throughout France.With the armorial bookplate of Antarctic explorer Sir Philip Lee Brocklehurst to the front pastedown.
