Very good in custom archival mylar cover.</p><p><strong>JULES ROTHSCHILD </strong>1838 – 1900 Honorary Consul of the Duchy of Saxe-Meiningen in 1866 made a French citizen in 1867 Jules Rothschild founded a publishing house in Paris. In 1855 he was noticed by the botanist Joseph Decaisne of the Institute who encouraged him to open the "Librairie de la Société botanique de France. Until the mid- 1880s he published numerous works there relating to insects and flowering plants. He was made a knight of the Legion of Honor in 1878 at which time he published the remarkable Musée entomologique illustré: natural iconographic history of insects offered here. In 1880 Stéphane Mallarmé offered him the essay Les Dieux antiques a new illustrated mythology after George William Cox. The publishing house that bears his name then moved to 13 rue des Saints-Pères. One of the last books he published was Plaisirs et jeux by Gaston Vuillier 1900 a remarkable album in large quarto format illustrated with heliogravures a rather rare technique at the time and printed in 3000 copies on fine paper.</p><p>Several plates from <em>Rothschild's Histoire Naturelle Iconographique des Insectes</em> were reproduced in <strong>MS Engel's Innumerable Insects: The Story of the Most Diverse and Myriad Animals on Earth Featuring Illustrations from One of the World's Great Rare Book Collections. Rothschild is known for impeccable technique an artistic eye and his eagerness to make a mark on Los Angeles. His photographs depict the city’s iconic venues the glamour of the film industry and sporting and political events. His rise to fame as a photographer is rooted in his stunning work at capturing the performing arts. He served as the official photographer of The Music Center from 1964 until a stroke in 1974; captured thousands of events at the Hollywood Bowl Philharmonic Auditorium as well as the Civic Light Opera leaving behind an archive of nearly half a million images. Combining the things he loved most—photography music and drama—Rothschild is remembered as a photographer who could get the best pictures not only because he had an impeccable technique but also because of his sensitivity and ability to make his subjects even the most finicky comfortable.Upon the founding of his business in 1937 the House of Rothschild he expanded his client roster to include major U.S. corporations such as Standard Oil Eastman Kodak Co. U.S. Steel Reynolds Aluminum Carnation Phillips Oil Transamerica and both the Republican and Democratic parties. Rothschild is credited for pioneering the use of 35mm film in the LA area utilizing a German-made Leica 1A almost immediately after it was released worldwide in 1925. This compact fixed-lens camera enabled him to take photographs anywhere. The zoological specimens collected during the expedition were presented to the Mus�um national d'histoire naturelle Paris. The collecting results of the expedition were published in three volumes two volumes of text and an atlas of plates. Scarce Limited to 400 copies. Presented here is the second volume only which contains descriptions of all the Coleoptera Siphonaptera Diptera Hymenoptera and Supplement to Coleoptera. 483-1041 2 pp. accompanying plates were published in an atlas not present here.
