First edition the issue for the New York patent a Vermont issue was published by the Poland Steam Printing House of Montpelier. A trade catalogue for a simple but effective piece of dairy equipment used to cool the milk and separate cream usually as part of the butter making process. The milk pans themselves are illustrated on the rear wrapper panel. A bit of edge wear to a few leaves. In printed pale salmon wrapper edge chipped and lightly soiled. Scarce. De La Vergne organized the De La Vergne Refrigeration Machine Co. The original intent was to manufacture refrigeration machines for breweries. His first machine had a 70-ton refrigeration capacity for Burr & Son Co. brewery in New York City. Soon the company was providing refrigeration for most of America’s best known breweries as well as some overseas. By the 1890s De La Vergne refrigeration was used by hotels restaurants dairies creameries chocolate manufacturers steamships and many more businesses.After De La Vergne died in 1892 the business was taken over by Jacob Ruppert who was interested in oil engines to meet the demand to power ice-making machines. “The result†said the 1936 issue of the Baldwin-Southwark Magazine “was the first commercially successful oil engine in the world.†In 1903 De La Vergne Refrigeration manufactured a 125 HP dual flywheel oil engine for display at the 1904 World’s Fair in St.Louis. Old folds now mellowed but with a nasty closed tear running down the middle of the sheet for 6.5 inches.Now housed in a removable clear archival sleeve with acid-free backing. Included is a handsomely printed handbill 4 x 6 inches for a 1988 lecture on "Victoria Opium and Empire." by Frank. J. Novak M.D. presented at Stanford University's Fairchild Auditorium. Commodities report from the Schieffelin drug firm including the going rate for opium oil. Jacob Schieffelin and his brother founded their drug company in 1794; in 1813 the firm passed to his sons who renamed the firm H. H Schieffelin located at the intersection of John St. and Cliff St. in Lower Manhattan about two blocks from today's South Street Seaport Museum. That firm dissolved in 1848.<p>Other trade goods listed include agricultural produce soaps lucifer matches various gums sulphur asbestos ginger etc. A fine glimpse into daily American life and global trade.</p> .
