Well-illustrated catalogue of launches and boiler engines produced in Racine Wisconsin by the Thomas Kane & Company who maintained a salesroom in Chicago. The company won a first prize for their steam boat launches sail boats and row boats at the Columbian Exposition in Chicago in 1893. This catalogue issued the previous year illustrates many of the launches and boats that were part of the exposition and competition. Romaine Guide to American Trade Catalogues p. 66 listing catalogues for the years 1880 1885 and 1893. Outing an Illustrated Monthly Magazine of Sport Travel and Recreation. Publisher's pale yellow wrappers with the front cover bearing an image of en working a mine and the back with an image of a rock drill. Very old central fold perhaps for mailing front cover with three old and small taper repairs. A very clean copy of this scarce trade catalog. OCLC only locates one copy.The Rand Drill Company established in the 1870s by brothers Jasper and Addison Rand and the first to see the benefits of Ingersoll's pneumatic drill became a significant name in the development and manufacturing of pneumatic drills and other mining equipment. Simon Ingersoll was an American inventor who created the steam-powered percussion rock drill which replaced the hand drill and was a major advancement in the mining and construction industries. Simon Ingersoll founded Ingersoll Rock Drill Company in 1871 in New York and in 1888 it combined with Sergeant Drill to form Ingersoll Sergeant Drill Company. In 1905 Ingersoll-Sergeant Drill Company merged with the Rand Drill Company to form the mega-corporation Ingersoll Rand. Ingersoll himself died penniless. Rand Drill Co. unknown

Illustrated with numerous drawings maps and halftone reproductions of photos and paintings. Stiff alligator-texture embossed paper boards with gilt stamped titles and decoration side stapled edges stained red. Front hinge detached and back hinge starting spine chipped cover soiled with corners bumped and edges rubbed blank preliminary inscribed and dated "1 2 91" with an erasure in the upper corner. Leaves are otherwise bright and unmarked. Published the year following the Great Seattle Fire. The first page of this ambitious promotion commemorates the recent incorporation of the Chamber of Commerce March 3 1890 stating its mission and listing its officers with portrait photos. In sum the lauded "Seattle Spirit" is manifested in this lavish promotional mere months following the disaster that leveled the city.<p>It begins with a survey of state resources then Seattle history with its commercial and cultural infrastructure followed by proud and optimistic descriptions of member businesses and commercial developments provided by their owners. With fine illustrations including architect's renderings of new commercial and residential buildings. Scarce at best.<p>A scarce promotional recorded by OCLC as held by 10 libraries four of them in Washington State. Now housed in a clear archival pouch with acid free backing. Trade card 13 x 7.5 cm. printed both sides the verso in chromolithography depicting the interior of a dining car with tables set in anticipation of the passengers' meals. Text on the recto reads "These Dining and Restaurant Cars run on the Chicago Rock Island & Pacific Railroad between Chicago and Omaha are in all respects the most luxurious traveling conveniences on the American continent. A bottle of fine French wine is served for an additional fifteen cents with an Extra Fine Meal for which only seventy-five cents is charged. Passengers will bear in mind that these are not the commonly-called Hotel Cars with their attendant high prices and bed-room odors. Our Dining Cars are used for no other purpose. All meals on Overland Trains are served in them. A. Smith Sup't Dining Car Line." The company became the Chicago Rock Island & Pacific Railroad in 1866 the company changed names frequently. In the mid-1870s the company established its Chicago-Omaha route. As such this card likely dates between the mid-1860s and mid-1870s. The railroad became known for introducing the first "elegant" dining cars to passenger trains and the lithograph on this trade card by Shober & Carqueville Lithographers of Chicago exudes elegance indeed.
