MID-NINETEENTH-CENTURY MANUSCRIPT SALES AGENT'S LEDGER RECORDING SHIPS AND THEIR CARGOES ARRIVING AT PANAMA

18521338Original manuscript. 1852-1854. Folio 38 x 27cm. Full contemporary reverse calf with gilt morocco titles labels to the spine "Rough Sales Book / S & L / B". Marbling to page edges. Marbled endpapers with engraved label for "Baily Brothers Booksellers Stationers Account Book Manufacturers" London to the front pastedown. 172pp. of manuscript text in ink on red-ruled laid paper watermarked "W. King / 1850" followed by c.160pp. blank with a handful of pages torn out following the conclusion of the manuscript text section and another within the text. The majority of entries are in English with some in Spanish mostly written in the same hand. Condition is very good the binding firm with marking to the boards chipping to the head of the spine and a little wear to the extremities. The contents with a 3cm tear to the head of the first text page and two pages partially cut/torn away at the bottom are otherwise in good order. The ledger of a British sales agents operating in Panama during the mid-nineteenth century detailing the importation and sale of a wide variety European and South American goods into the country.The manuscript meticulously records the origin city/country importer ship the goods received and sold and the charges entailed for each shipment. A typical entry for example records the arrival of "gunpowder received per "Alexander" and sold on behalf of the Kames Gunpowder Company Glasgow" followed by details of the subsequent purchasers "J. D. Cordova" etc. and the charges/commissions taken by the agent including fees for landing expenses and "carriage to arsenal". Many of the entries describe large diverse cargoes combining both essential and luxury goods including: alpacas; chocolate pots; "41 cases of pickles and mustard"; lavender water; rocking chairs; a "copying machine"; cinnamon; scissors razors; bone buttons; horse brushes; compasses; gin; hatchets; bedsteads; looking glasses; children's toys; cloves; muslins; kegs of shot; cups and saucers; tobacco; machetes; claret; playing cards rat traps; "Aqua de Colonia" cologne; silk gloves; saddles; blunderbusses; padlocks; lace; pantaloons; "Jamaica rum"; almonds; vinegar; bonnets; sausages; gold frames; water closets; wash stands; champagne; mosquito nets; and much else besides.The origin ports include major European trade centres such as Liverpool and Glasgow but also include many South American ports such as Guayaquil Equador carrying beans cocoa coffee sugar and quinoa amongst other things; Buenaventura Colombia; Callao Peru carrying candlesticks coffee mills and bayonets; Lima Peru "bottled fruits" and cherry cordial; and Valparaiso Chile; as well as San Francisco and New York to the north. A Manuscript ‘Public Statement of protest’ Recording the Hostile Actions of a French Privateer Against a Portuguese Merchantman in June 1813

Folio 7 pages 13 1/8 x 8 Â¼ inches duty blindstamp small ink stamp to upper inner margin of the first page two seals to the last page signed twice by Galindo. Toned some small repaired tears using reversible archival ph-neutral paper-repair tape very good to near fine. Very Good. An interesting document of privateering in the Peninsular war this â€˜Public Instrument of Protestâ€˜ documents a Portuguese captain and crew complaint in detail to an English notary. After sailing from Calcutta to Brazil and then from Rio to just outside of Lisbon their ship the 700-ton â€˜Oceanoâ€™ was seized and comprehensively ransacked by a French privateer the â€˜Lionâ€™ out of Lorient. Most of the crew and passengers were offloaded onto a passing American vessel the â€˜Ledaâ€™ bound for Lisbon. Meanwhile the â€˜Lyonâ€™ escorted her prize towards the nearest French port but before a friendly haven was reached they were both set upon by the brigantine HMS â€˜Achatesâ€™. The â€˜Lyonâ€™ escaped but the â€˜Oceanâ€™ was captured by Commander Morrison and the â€˜Achetesâ€™. The â€™Oceanâ€™ was taken to Plymouth and moored in the Hamoaze. The remaining Portuguese crew who had been forced to remain aboard the â€˜Oceanâ€™ by the French got a message to the â€˜Oceanâ€™s Master Dn. Ignacio Joze Martins and he and the boatswain made their way to Plymouth as quickly as possible. The sworn statement presented here is in English thanks to the translation given by Francisco Martins d' Magalhaens master of a Portuguese ship â€œnow dwelling in Plymouthâ€ The â€™Oceanoâ€™ sailed from Calcutta to Brazil arriving 10th February 1813. She left Rio on 4th April all was plain sailing until the afternoon of the 7th June off the Rock of Lisbon when the â€˜Lionâ€™ showed up first under false British colors then French. The fighting was fierce the privateer was driven off once but eventually the â€˜Oceanoâ€™ was taken. The night of the 7th June was spent by the French â€˜conveying everything Moveable and Valuable from the Ocean to the Privateerâ€™. The â€˜Ledaâ€™ the US vessel landed the majority of the â€˜Oceanâ€™s crew including the Master in Lisbon on the evening of the 9th June.Monday 14th June the â€˜Lyonâ€™ engaged in a running battle with HMS â€˜Achatesâ€™ and escaped but the â€˜Achatesâ€™ did capture the â€˜Oceanâ€™. Wednesday 16th June the â€˜Oceanâ€™ arrived in Plymouth under the watchful eye of the â€˜Achatesâ€™. Receiving the crewâ€™s message the Captain of the â€˜Oceanâ€™ left Lisbon for Falmouth and then Plymouth arriving on the 20th July. The document was dated 21st July 1813. The mid-term elections of 1884 were a disaster for the Democrats led by Grover Cleveland. Republicans and Populists in large part due to the efforts of Joseph Weeks Babcock 1850-1909 a Republican Congressman from Wisconsin who helped organize the Republican Congressional Campaign Committee in 1893 and was a major force in routing the Democrats in the 1894 House elections which cost the Democrats 113 of their 218 seats. They are most likely printed by Hartman & Cadick Republican printers. All follow the same format of quoting leading figures and using bold face type. 1: Caption title "If the Laboring Class be to Perish I Say the Whole Nation." A the head of the title: No. 1 - From the Congressional Record. The caption title is from the English Reformer William Cobbett followed by "You cannot reduce the laborer to a state of starvation and degradation without also destroying national prosperity" a quote from Joseph Norton Dolph 1835-1897 Senator from Oregon from one of his many speeches quoted here. OCLC locates only a single copy at the Rutherford B. Hayes Presidential Center. A very good copy docketed on front wrapper mail fold. 2: Caption title "The industrial side of the tariff controversy must not be overlooked. The four millions of people who work in our factory system are the most potent factors outside of agriculture in our civilization." - Hon. J. W. Babcock Wisconsin. A the head of the title: Record No. 3. Apparently unrecorded. We could find no copies in OCLC NUC or other reference sources. Chip to front wrapper else very good with docketing stamp. 3: Caption title "When you Rob the Laboring Men of their Employment you Rob the Farmers of their Customers." The quote from the caption title belongs to Charles Curtis 1860-1936 Republican from Kansas who would go on to become Hoover's Vice President. The nameless author disclaims any "intention to advocate the revival or regret the abolition of the Slave Trade. . . It is a traffic so objectionable in almost every respect that being abolished for the most part I hope never to see it revived and that every endeavour will be made to realize those advantages which the zeal of the authors of the Abolition has induced them to expect." However "The passage of the registration bill would constitute an unwarranted interference of the central power in the planters' private affairs" Ragatz. The property right of the West Indian colonists in their slaves is non-negotiable. Slaves comprise "the most valuable property of our colonists." Parliament's interference with "the private rights and private property of our colonists. . . would absolutely and tyrannically deprive the individuals whose property it is proposed to regulate and affect of those constitutional means of redress which all British subjects are entitled to." The pamphlet prints resolutions of West Indian Planters objecting to any such intrusions on their rights. The anonymous author objects to the African Institution's "representations of the miseries and hardships of slaves and in circulating ignorantly and unguardedly no doubt the most unfounded calumnies on the subject. If these gentlemen were to compare the situation of the Irish peasantry with that of our colonial slaves they would find they were comparing the extreme of wretchedness with comparative comfort." One full-page engraved map titled "Route of the Egyptian Army under Ahmed Pasha on a Slaving Expedition February 1843" by Standidge and Co. p. 169. Later black half morocco binding over black cloth with five raised bands forming six compartments on spine with gilt-lettered title in second and fourth compartments and date in sixth with the binder's ticker of Monastery Hill Bindery on back pastedown Important documents letters and reports regarding Great Britain's efforts to curtail the African slave trade across the globe including over 100 pages of diplomatic cables with the USA. "Class D. Correspondence" referred to diplomatic letters between the Foreign Office and nations that had not signed treaties with Great Britain regarding the slave trade. Every year from 1830 to 1859 this correspondence was presented to both Houses of Parliament and published: this is the annual compendium covering the year 1843. And though the importation of slaves was illegal in the United States at that time there is a considerable amount of American-British interaction. Great Britain had abolished slavery in toto throughout its colonies in 1834 after the passage of the Abolition Act of 1833. It had been home to a powerful abolition movement that held influence in government for some time prior. Great Britain's economy had grew less dependent on slavery than its rivals like the US were and slave revolts on its far-flung colonies had been costly to put down. Those reasons coupled with domestic religious and social sentiment had led the British Empire to take action. Insistent British diplomatic correspondence is included here with other key major powers who had not yet signed on to trying to halt the slave trade. The present work covers contacts with Central America Equator New Granada Peru various consulates in the United States the Barbary States Egypt Turkey Crete Albania and Muscat.
