American First Editions: 40 pp.; tan wrappers; printed return envelope for the bookshop laid in. Cover split at bottom of spine two inches; loss at leading front corner tip; moderate creasing and soil; Good condition. First Books: 16 pp.; stapled printed gold wrappers. Forward by Robert A. Volz about Mr. Kohn a leading midtown Manhattan antiquarian bookseller who went on to found the well known Seven Gables Bookshop followed by Kohn's forward to his catalog three. Laid in is an autograph letter on note paper dated December 29 1976 to Bernard Rosenthal from John Kohn's wife Francis: "Dear Barney Thank you for your kind understanding letter of sympathy . . . last June he became seriously ill and he coped with it with incredible courage. He loved his work and wanted to go on with it as long as possible . . . Love Frankie. Also laid in: a typed carbon copy letter date January 1978 unsigned from Bernard Rosenthal to Robert Volz acknowledging receipt of "First Books by American Authors" in several paragraphs; another typed carbon copy dated 1980 is a short note asking if it would be possible to obtain one or two more. Both of these are on the back Rosenthal's printed letterheads one a printed claim form for orders. Finally a typed letter signed by Robert Volz May 22nd 1980 on Chapin Library letterhead to Bernard Rosenthal in response to the May 22nd with the promise of two copies news about the John S. Van E. Kohn Memorial Fund and the intent to also send a copy of catalog for a current exhibition "Woodcuts in German Books: 1465-1525." The two volumes are housed in a Bernard M. Original February 5 1937 Portfolio created by the Nashville Chamber of Commerce. A fairly incredible "time-capsule" glance and 20th Century Nashville in the making. This unique book was created specifically for the purpose of garnering the business of the Norvell & Wallace Lumber factory. We assume that other similar copies were created on an individual basis when the city saw fit to "scout" major companies for the area. We have located "0" copies on OCLC and "0" auction records. The summary states "The principal advantages Nashville offers to industry and other lines of business is summarized from this survey." A few of the stats that immediately jumped out at me - 1 The report predates any television station in Nashville 2 When polling races in the city the report denotes 111025 white citizens 42836 negro citizens and 5 of "other" races 3 only two airlines American and Eastern service the city and the municipal airport was dedicated only a few months before this report. 21 tables and graphs including rail distance and hours by train to other US cities flying hours from Nashville power rates gainful workers condition of the banks of Nashville and more. The folding map mounted at rear measures roughly 25 X 30 inches. Origianl stab binding intact. Pages and text clean. Covers are separated from the text. Catalogue XI has been punched for a three-ring binder. splotch to from cover of Catalogue X. Very good and quite scarce. OCLC only locates one instance of each catalog and both are at the California State Library their copy of Catalogue X is lacking pp. 35-46. Very good.Remco Redwood Pipe Company was known for using old-growth redwood timber in its Redwood piping manufacturing. Using massive amounts of redwood in their pipes and the pipes were lauded as they were large-diameter lightweight and durable. They were used primarily used for municipal water systems irrigation and industrial purposes. With the growing power of the environmentalist movement the use of old-growth redwood was seen as a cardinal sin rightly so and they eventually bowed to public pressure and ceased manufacturing their pipes. Greg King the author of Ghost Forest relates this ironic tidbit; " â€œI point first to Wiggington Creed. Creed a powerful Bay Area attorney married into the Hooper clan who were the worldâ€™s biggest redwood merchants. After the death of the most powerful brother in 1916 Creed inherited his assets which included lumber. In 1919 he also became one of the five founding directors of Save the Redwoods League. The following year he wrote the Leagueâ€™s articles of incorporation and bylaws. And at the same time he accepted the presidentâ€™s position at PG&E. Now PG&E was the worldâ€™s largest consumer of stave redwood pipes at that time. The largest producer of those stave pipes was the Redwood Manufacturers Company or Remco. And Wiggington Creed was president of thatâ€¦â€ Redwoods Manufacturing Company unknown

194176168Boston: Charak Furniture Company 1941. First edition. Oblong quarto 12 x 9 1/4 inches. 79 1 pp. of which all but four pages are comprised of photographic illustrations of furniture on offer. Publisher's spiral bound brown and white wrappers titled in black. Some ligght weat to edges and very minor soiling to rear but overall a very handsome copy.One copy located by OCLC. The first 60 pp. contain images of the company's specialty; fine reproductions of 18th century American furniture and the rest of the catalog are of their modern furniture."Over the course of nearly seven decades Charak Furniture Company produced exemplary reproductions of 18th-century-era furniture including works created in the American colonial and Georgian styles as well as sophisticated mid-century modern pieces made by the likes of German furniture designer and painter Tommi Parzinger. Charak was established in Boston Massachusetts in 1919. It earned a reputation for exceptional design and durability and the 1920s were a period of high production for the brand. Charak was a leading manufacturer of reproductions of early American furniture that was influenced by Queen Anne– and Georgian–era design including secretaries dressers and cabinets with exquisite details like accented moldings carved finials recessed door panels claw feet and other embellishments. While the Great Depression put many furniture manufacturers out of business Charak Furniture Company weathered the era’s difficulties. In fact during the 1930s it introduced one of its most enduringly popular dining tables: the drop leaf Danbury table. The solid mahogany table which features four leaves to comfortably accommodate larger dining parties as necessary is supported by four slender and elegantly curving legs a wonderful example of the company's furniture from this era."
