En 1807 il organise un important recensement de la population et de l'agriculture puis des enquêtes sur l'industrie et l'enseignement . Son ouvrage donne un large panorama du département tant du point de vue de la population que des activités, de l'enseignement, des contributions.

In 1813 he joined William Atkinson, architect to the ordnance in London, and in 1823 went into private practice as a civil engineer.
