Fine.<br/> offered with Manuscript document headed "Chamber of Commerce 2nd March 1801." Folio leaf folded to 1 3 blanks pp addressed on last page "For Mr. T. W. Francis". The manuscript prints Resolutions to be considered for revision of certain Rules at the next meeting.<br/><br/> The Rules set forth in XVI numbered paragraphs were adopted at a meeting on January 5 1801. AAS's copy has our imprint; other copies list only the year not the month or day. The Chamber's web site states "Since 1801 the Chamber has brought area businesses and civic leaders together to promote growth and create opportunity in our region." This mission comports with that printed in its Articles of Association: "For the purpose of aiding the Trade of the City of Philadelphia by carrying into effect such Rules and Regulations as may from time to time be established with respect to our Commerce and the adjustment of Mercantile differences between each other." <br/> Thomas Whilling Francis 1767-1815 born in Philadelphia graduated from the University of Pennsylvania in 1784. He then entered the family mercantile firm of Willing and Francis. In 1786 he became a private in the Fourth Company Second Philadelphia Battalion of the City Cavalry and years later was promoted to Captain. An original member of the Chamber of Commerce he served on its Committee for the first month of its existence and in 1815 was its vice-president. He was also a director of various Philadelphia mercantile educational governmental and benevolent establishments. 15202344New York: Dr. Jeanne Walter n.d. ca. 1915-20. <br /><br />24mo 5 3/4 x 3 7/16 inches; 143 x 88 mm 23 1 pages in printed stapled wrappers soft cover. <br /><br />An early 20th-century version of fat shaming: Dr. Jeanne Walter promises to reduce your "superfluous flesh" if you buy her medicated rubber garments. "Any physician will tell you that by inducing profuse perspiration you can reduce flesh relieve any kind of rheumatism skin diseases and many other ailments because it stimulates circulation and eliminates waste products through the pores" page 3. <br /><br />This pamphlet features a woman modeling such products as chin bust and abdominal reducers as well as jackets suits belts and pants. All in glorious black-and-white halftone illustrations. Most products are aimed at women although a page is devoted to a mustachioed guy wearing an abdominal belt that works by "stimulating circulation in the organs of digestion and by drawing out the uric acid from the system relieving any rheumatic condition that may exist" page 20. <br /><br />The pamphlet doesn't carry a date. But 1915 would have been the earliest date of issue based on an advertisement in The New York Times of October 3 1915 in which the company announced a new address of 353 Fifth Avenue the same address printed on the pamphlet. <br /><br />OCLC shows one institutional holding of a 1909 edition that carries a different title pagination and size at the American Textile History Museum Library. However there are no holdings of this edition. RARE. <br /><br />CONDITION: Some nicks and creasing to wrappers stains to lower wrapper rusting to staples tiny ink mark at bottom corner throughout. All approximately 34.5 x 49.5 printed on the recto only in ten columns. Each column serves a different purpose: serial number; date; name of the trader; number of bags; destination; number of wooden crates; weight; taxes; signature of the recipient; and instructions for the tax collector. Documents permitting and taxing the movement of opium by the Government of Gwalior. The name of the trader on one of the documents has been identified as "Bhakim Chand Pijara." These documents were sold in a single lot at Superior Galleries Los Angeles January 16 2001 Session Two lot 847.
