Well-illustrated catalogue of launches and boiler engines produced in Racine Wisconsin by the Thomas Kane & Company who maintained a salesroom in Chicago. The company won a first prize for their steam boat launches sail boats and row boats at the Columbian Exposition in Chicago in 1893. This catalogue issued the previous year illustrates many of the launches and boats that were part of the exposition and competition. Printed title in blue and red within an embossed gilt ornamental frame one printed "Notice" from the publisher dated June 1842 49 specimens of embossed cards many tinted some printed all mounted to stiff card stock; and 7 sheets of "Embossed Specimens of Printed Billets" sewn to a stiff printed card. Oblong 4to. Bound in an album of contemporary half calf and marbled paper boards with red leather label on upper cover stamped in gilt "Dickinson's Embossed Cards" calf shows much deterioration and corrosion although the sewing is still intact 28 specimen cards have been removed and are no longer present some minor soiling and foxing but generally vey clean and sound internally custom morocco backed folding box. Printed title in blue and red within an embossed gilt ornamental frame one printed "Notice" from the publisher dated June 1842 49 specimens of embossed cards many tinted some printed all mounted to stiff card stock; and 7 sheets of "Embossed Specimens of Printed Billets" sewn to a stiff printed card. Oblong 4to. With a very interesting presentation note from a previous Philadelphia owner Alfred Darrach dated 1928 affixed to the front pastedown identifying the original owner his grandfather as Christian Gobrecht 1785-1844 artist engraver embosser inventor engraver to the U.S. Mint and from 1840-1844 the 4th United States Engraver of the Mint where he was responsible for the creation of several new models and designs including the famous Seated Liberty design which appeared on a variety of American coins from 1836 through 1890. <br /> Gobrecht designed many notable medals coins and dies during his career but he also "invented a speaking doll and later a camera lucida. He also produced engravings for calico printers and dies for bookbinders. He engraved the brass dies for embossing the Morocco covers of the Boston Token from 1831 - 1836 as well as the eagle cover of the Philadelphia Token. Among the medals he engraved were the Charles Willson Peale medal the Franklin Institute medal etc ." - DAB.<br /> A remarkable specimen album in and of itself all the more so for having belonged to one of America's most important engravers. We cannot say for sure but it is entirely likely that if Gobrecht himself did not design many of the dies for this embosser he may have used the album for his own work and possibly removed the cards which are no longer present. Publisher' brown wrappers with company name in raised gold lettering and title in white. A bit of edge wear and an old faint tidemark to outer lower corner about an inch but a very good copy.One is tempted to think that the excessive coddling of youngsters is a Millennial thing; not so. These carriages are excessively luxurious and with prices to reflect that. Original printed wrappers a few stains but a sound and attractive copy. Specialty items include elevators drive belts conveyors sprocket wheels and machinery for mining and mill factories. Established in Columbus in 1877 Jeffrey Manufacturing was instrumental in developing the mining and coal industries of eastern Ohio and western Pennsylvania. One of its most important products was the "Jeffrey Electric Locomotive" which moved on tracks inside mines and towed tons of rock and saved hours of labor and contributed to mine safety. Not cited in Romaine. This catalogue is one of the few original sources documenting mining equipment produced by the largest industrial plants in Ohio at the end of the nineteenth century. unknown

Although not stated in OCLC. this cops copy has 5 bis plates for no. 22 and one bis plate for no. 66. Publisher's blind ruled brown cloth gilt gilt cover lettering. marbled endpapers From hinge nicely repaired but still with a chip to the loer gutter margin of the marled endpapers. The text block is quite clean. A handsome copy of a wonderful trace catalog.There were 3 or 4 editions of this catalog and the only way of telling the difference is by the plate count which has by far the most number of plates. And this copy has even more as no cataloger have ever mentioned the bis plates. Only 5 of this edition located by OCLC all with no mention of any bis plates. "Little is known about the life of the Parisian publisher of Le Garde-meuble Désiré Guilmard c. 1810-c.1885 except that he founded the publishing firm of D. Guilmard in 1839. Because his name appears as the "delineator" of the majority of the furniture plates in Le Garde-meuble many historians presumed he was a furniture designer. However he is not known to have had a furniture shop nor are there any signed examples of his furniture extant. We do know that Guilmard was closely connected to the Parisian design community and through his numerous publications see below became an influential purveyor of taste. He was also an exceptionally able businessman who promoted French furniture and design during a fifty-year period of rapidly changing taste" Smithsonian. D.Guilmard hardcover
1890502San Francsico California: Pacific Rolling Mill Company 1890. 8vo. 250 x 170 mm. 10 x 7 inches. 100 pp. plus 4 leaves of ruled paper 2 with measurements in manuscript. Illustrated throughout with simple drawings of parts many stenciled with green wash; one plate folding. Bound in limp cloth covered boards title in gilt on front cover; a cloth binding shows some wear to gilt title two pencil drawings on front endpaper; other a very good sound copy. Straight forward price list of iron bar steel rail rolled and forged metal axles nuts bolts washers and dozens of other metal products. There is no introduction about the history of the firm just images of parts prices and a few lines of text describing specifications for some of the more complicated manufacture items. What distinguishes this rare trade catalogue is the design sense of many of the images and the application of stenciled color to highlight the object. The printed form of the parts are in outline and as one pages through the catalogue the images take on an abstract quality. Metal parts become contoured shapes with form being determined only by the light green wash applied to the physical part of the design. Although unintentional I am sure this late 19th century publication replete with many of the characteristics of period book design exhibits a very modernist feel one that is most unusual in publications of this nature. Although called the 7th edition this is only one of three issues of the PRMC's product guide and price list that is known. Organized in 1867 PRMC grew continuously and by 1892 was producing more than 40 thousand tons of iron and steel. "This giant enterprise is so closely identified with the manufacturing interests of the Pacific Coast that there is scarcely a manufacturing firm or corporation on the Coast that does not depend upon its output. The mills are located at Potrero Point in South San Francisco and cover an immense area" Master Hands. Romaine Guide to American Trade Catalogues p. 200 this edition and one from 1886 both known in only one copy each at California Historical Society. OCLC cites an edition from 1885 in one copy at San Francisco Public Library and this edition 1890 also in only one copy at California H. S. Very old central fold perhaps for mailing front cover with three old and small taper repairs. A very clean copy of this scarce trade catalog. OCLC only locates one copy.The Rand Drill Company established in the 1870s by brothers Jasper and Addison Rand and the first to see the benefits of Ingersoll's pneumatic drill became a significant name in the development and manufacturing of pneumatic drills and other mining equipment. Simon Ingersoll was an American inventor who created the steam-powered percussion rock drill which replaced the hand drill and was a major advancement in the mining and construction industries. Simon Ingersoll founded Ingersoll Rock Drill Company in 1871 in New York and in 1888 it combined with Sergeant Drill to form Ingersoll Sergeant Drill Company. In 1905 Ingersoll-Sergeant Drill Company merged with the Rand Drill Company to form the mega-corporation Ingersoll Rand. Ingersoll himself died penniless. Rand Drill Co. unknown

De La Vergne organized the De La Vergne Refrigeration Machine Co. The original intent was to manufacture refrigeration machines for breweries. His first machine had a 70-ton refrigeration capacity for Burr & Son Co. brewery in New York City. Soon the company was providing refrigeration for most of America’s best known breweries as well as some overseas. By the 1890s De La Vergne refrigeration was used by hotels restaurants dairies creameries chocolate manufacturers steamships and many more businesses.After De La Vergne died in 1892 the business was taken over by Jacob Ruppert who was interested in oil engines to meet the demand to power ice-making machines. “The result†said the 1936 issue of the Baldwin-Southwark Magazine “was the first commercially successful oil engine in the world.†In 1903 De La Vergne Refrigeration manufactured a 125 HP dual flywheel oil engine for display at the 1904 World’s Fair in St.Louis. Dean Steam Pump is one of the most respected brands in its industry. Established after the Civil War the company under various ownerships has produced reliable and industrial grade pumping systems and over time has introduced innovations that have been become standards for the entire trade. In the 19th century the company made the transition from steam to turbine to electric pumps and produced vacuum pumps air pumps circulating pumps etc. for such diverse businesses as maple sugar companies to petroleum refiners. Romaine Guide to American Trade Catalogues p. 297 cites an 1890 edition published from the New York Offices and this edition published in 1897. A couple of chips to the lower corner of rear wrappers one of the foldouts with a tear at the fold-line light spine erosion. But a very good copy of this very ephemeral piece. Game rules seem to have had short life spans.There is no history or definition of this game but from reading the catalog it seems to be a variety of croquet. But instead of simple hoops this game used very elaboarate and expensive pieces. Castles that actually look like castles for example. The printed paper wrapperstwo brads split to upper spine tell us that Albert Grosfeld's main showroom was on Third Avenuce in New York City but he also had showrooms in Chicago and Los Angele. Is is accompanied by 100 placards showing the furniture on offer. Each card measures 7 5/8 by 9 1/2 inches and bears a photographic illustration of the piece along with a printed description stock number and dimensions As follows: 1111/20150 Adam Satinwood Writing Desk hand-decorated leather top. MADE IN ENGLAND. H. 38". W. 42". D. 23". Very good condition.The company seems to have specilaized in high end reproductions of antique furniture. 189076420San Bernardino: Greene & Wastell ca. 1890. Each card is lithographed in colors on stiff stock and measures 6 x 11 inches. All bear the image of a famous American with the exception of the Shakespeare card a portrait of each a view of their residence a quote attributed to them and a facsimile of their signature. The subjects are Thomas Jefferson John Greenleaf Whittier Abraham Lincoln and William Shakespeare. The Whittier card has a tiny bit of the upper left corner absent hard to discern but on the whole they are bright fresh and clean.The firm as quite a successful one in the early history of San Bernardino; ""This firm by their indomitable pluck and enterprise have built up a trade during the past two years thatis second to none in the city. They opened up in business in San Bernardino in October 1889 in one-half of the store they now occupy in the post office block. Business grew at such a rapid rate that they soon had to obtain possession of the other half of the store which they succeeded in doing. When they enlarged their store a large stock of new goods was added to the already magnificent stock. They now have about $35000 stock on hand of the finest goods in the clothing and dry goods line in the state" San Bernardino Courier January 1 1892. Sadly we cannot determine who the printer was. One side shows a picture in black and white of four happy girls in the four seasons wearing shoes suitable to the weather and the details about where to obtain to shoes. The other side shows a picture of two children standing on the beach in colour with the text "Sister - tell me what do the wild waves say" Silver tipped shoes only for children at play! Birch Bark - Chromo no. 1. I have dated this from another version of this card for Edward T. Merill a shoe dealer in Portland Maine.
1867ST20572Hamilton Scotland: W. Naismith 1867. FIRST EDITION. 168 x 106 mm. 6 1/2 x 4 1/4". vii 183 pp. <br/> In the very rare original green paper wrappers. Spine cocked wrappers somewhat soiled spine with paper beginning to lift along the bottom inch of the rear joint other minor exterior defects but the volume solid and internally in excellent condition. QUITE A GOOD COPY of a fragile inexpensively produced volume one would expect to find in shambles.<br/> <br/> Told in the form of letters drawn from the author's actual correspondence as well as his contemporary journals this first-hand account by a young sailor of the transatlantic slave trade in the years 1800-04 brings those horrific voyages vividly to life. At the same time the author writing in direct unvarnished prose makes it clear he is at least as much an observer of difficult sea life in general as he is concerned with the abolition of a great evil. In the preface Robinson 1786-1875 explains his reasons for publishing this record of his time aboard a slave ship: "I have heard so many gross misstatements respecting West Indian slavery and the horrors of the 'Middle Passage' that I formed the resolution should time be allowed me to give the result of my own experience . . . in order to disabuse the minds of many well-meaning people." He is rightly aware that some readers may be offended by unconvincing apology in an account encumbered with naïveté : "It is doubtless the opinion of many that I put myself into a wrong position and incurred blame and obloquy by entering into this obnoxious trade at all. It may be so; I will not dispute the matter. I certainly did not feel myself comfortable or at home in the service. But let it be remembered in my favour that the trade was then a lawful one; whilst at the same time I was induced to enter it by what is called an accidental circumstance . . . and an irresistible desire for a seafaring life so completely carried me away that it became a matter of perfect indifference to me where the ship went if not to the bottom provided I was aboard of her--or in what trade engaged if not a pirate." As indicated the letters originating in various ports in England West Africa and the West Indies depict a harsh life at sea for all involved but most especially for the wretches who made up the ship's cargo. An accident on board nearly cost Robinson his foot and ended his career at sea just a year before in his words "the united voice of a generous and philanthropic people" passed the Emancipation Bill into law ending British participation in the slave trade. The phrasing here makes it clear our narrator had his heart mostly in the right place. This is a very rare book which is not surprising for a pocket-sized work from a provincial press near Glasgow issued in insubstantial paper wrappers. OCLC records just two copies in libraries both in the UK while RBH and ABSA seem to list no copies at auction except the present one. W. Naismith unknown
