Map endpapers, 224 pages, glossy paper section with b&w photos. He is entertainingly informative on such unpromising aspects as geology and pollution; his historical vignettes are exciting and colourful; and the people he meets during his journey are observed and reported without any concessions to conventional 'character sketching'. The mecilessly limned Australian bores aboard the river steamer, the indomitable mrs. Rockett with her devotion to the river that robbed her of her husband, and many others, spring sharply from the pages for the reader's enjoyment. This is a book that is refreshingly different from those that offer travelogue information, idyllic scenic descriptions, or personal prejudcies. it is in every sense revealing about the Thames; and it is also revealing about the personality of the author. There is an 'I' as well as a very keen Eye, on the river."
