Rochester N.Y.: D.M. Dewey n.d. ca. 1872. An early American trade catalogue of Fruit Flowers Trees and Nursery stock issued according to the Smithsonian Library "ca. 1872" by the firm of D.M. Dewey Rochester N.Y. Many of the plates have captions giving name of variety of plant and brief information on main characteristics and growing season. The Smithsonian copy contains only 24 plates compared to the 40 in the above copy. "Nurserymen's plates were an American innovation. They were made by various methods the most distinctive being painted in watercolors. In design and coloring these plates were more akin to folk painting than to the commercial art of their time" Charles von Ravenswaay "Drawn and Colored from Nature" in Antiques Magazine March 1983 pp. 594-599. A trade catalogue for the distilled products of Ben Burk Inc. the distillery more famous for their long-running Old Mr. Boston Bartender's Guide. The Guide first appeared with Repeal of Prohibition in 1934 though it was preceded by a number of printings of One Hundred Cocktails Some Old -- Some New and One Hundred and Twenty Cocktails Fizzes Punches Highballs Toddies and Long Drinks 1932 ff. So this trade catalogue is concurrent with the end of Prohibition and the beginnings of the famous cocktail guide. With promotional descriptions of eight spirits each with an 'actual size' image of the bottle. Some rubbing and staining to wrappers with some of the staining reaching the interior. Stiff card wrappers printed in red black and silver and with a de-bossed silver image of Mr. Boston himself. Near very good. Unrecorded. OCLC locates no copies; not in Noling. Padgitt Brothers Company was established in 1869 and incorporated in 1900; the company's success "in supplying the needs of the saddlery trade of the Southwest gave them first-hand knowledge of materials and design that were recognized as standard wherever good goods are sold." Their catalogues were "a veritable encyclopedia of saddlery facts classified for your convenience . there is no reason why this book should not prove a 'silent partner' in the success of every dealer who will utilize its pages freely." The profusely illustrated catalogue with pricing information is organized into sections for saddles and varieties of tack down to spurs buckles hobbles canvas wagon covers buggy tops blankets and feedbags. The Padgitt "Bronco Brand" saddle and accessories were widely known throughout the Southwest.
