A scarce privately printed English language translation of this biographical study of Napoleon Bonaparte from French historian Arthur Levy.Based on hitherto unpublished documents relating to Napoleon's life and first published in the original French in 1893 this work claims in the preface that 'it is truthful it obeys justice it fights tyranny it loves the people and it hates vice'.Illustrated with a colour frontispiece with captioned tissue guard from a painting by Francois Flemeng and a facsimile plate of a letter dated 1811.Privately Printed for Subscribers Only.Undated; dated 1902 via Jisc. In the publisher's original cloth binding. Bumping to back strip head and tail with rubbing and fading of the cloth to boards and joints. Small losses to perimeters of paper spine label. Front joint starting with board holding firm. Significant areas of fading to boards. Internally firmly bound with the exception of facsimile plate following title page which is only detached to head. One page of adverts to the rear of Volume I. Volume I bound without the half-title. In the original publisher's cloth binding. Externally smart. Spines are a little faded. Minor bumping to the head and tail of the spine and to the extremities. Some light marks to the boards and spines. Small tide mark to the head of the spine of Volume II. Internally firmly bound. Pages are bright and clean with a few light spots. Volume I bound without the half-title. Stamp of John N. Bullen to various pages throughout each volume.
