Charles-Maurice de Talleyrand-Périgord 1st Prince of Benevento then Prince of Talleyrand was a French secularized clergyman statesman and leading diplomat. After studying theology he became Agent-General of the Clergy in 1780. In 1789 just before the French Revolution he became Bishop of Autun. He worked at the highest levels of successive French governments most commonly as foreign minister or in some other diplomatic capacity. He served as the French Diplomat in the Congress of Vienna. His career spanned the regimes of Louis XVI the years of the French Revolution Napoleon Louis XVIII Charles X and Louis Philippe I. Those Talleyrand served often distrusted him but found him extremely useful.<br> Talleyrand was Napoleon's chief diplomat during the years when French military victories brought one European state after another under French hegemony. Most of the time he worked for peace so as to consolidate France's gains. He succeeded in obtaining peace with Austria through the 1801 Treaty of Lunéville and with Britain in the 1802 Treaty of Amiens. He could not prevent the renewal of war in 1803 but by 1805 he opposed his emperor's renewed wars against Austria Prussia and Russia. He resigned as foreign minister in August 1807 but retained the trust of Napoleon. He conspired to undermine the emperor's plans through secret dealings with Tsar Alexander I of Russia and the Austrian minister Klemens von Metternich. Talleyrand sought a negotiated secure peace so as to perpetuate the gains of the French Revolution. Napoleon rejected peace; when he fell in 1814 Talleyrand supported the Bourbon Restoration decided by the Allies. He played a major role at the Congress of Vienna in 1814–1815 where he negotiated a favorable settlement for France and played a role in unwinding the Napoleonic Wars. Printed for J. Napoleon Hill was an American self-help author and con artist best known for his book "Think and Grow Rich"1937 which is among the best-selling self-help books of all time. Hill's works insisted that fervid expectations are essential to improving one's life and most of his books were promoted as expounding principles to achieve "success. Accused of fraud modern historians also doubt many of his claims such as that he met Andrew Carnegie and that he was an attorney. 1871151123London and New York: Macmillan and Co. 1871-1879. First English edition of this critical biography that attempts to demythologize Napoleon Bonaparte. Octavo four volumes bound in early twentieth century three-quarters morocco over marble covered boards by Zaensdorf with gilt titles and elaborate tooling to the spine in six compartments within raised bands top edges gilt marbled endpapers. In very good condition. Pierre Lanfrey’s The History of Napoleon the First 1871–1879 is a multi-volume critical biography that seeks to reassess and demythologize Napoleon Bonaparte by emphasizing his political ambition strategic calculation and authoritarian tendencies. Covering the period from Napoleon’s birth in 1769 through the expansion of the French Empire to 1811 Lanfrey analyzes key military campaigns including those in Italy and Egypt alongside the consolidation of imperial power and diplomatic maneuvering in Europe. Drawing extensively on Napoleon’s correspondence Lanfrey challenges the heroic and romantic portrayals prevalent in earlier historiography presenting instead a portrait of a calculating ruler whose pursuit of dominance overshadowed administrative reform. Left incomplete at Lanfrey’s death in 1877 the work remains notable for its rigorous archival research and its early contribution to critical Napoleonic scholarship. Macmillan and Co. hardcover

1804003843original letter. NAPOLEON I; MULLER Francois 1764-1808. Autograph letter signed to Napoleon I undated but post-1804. 1 sheet written in brown ink. Addressed to "Sa Majeste l'Empereur des Francais". Contemporary or near-contemporary note at foot identifying the writer as "le gal. de division Muller" with Paris address rue du faubourg St Honore. Creased from folding edges chipped with small losses and light soiling but text clear and fully legible. About good. A petition from General Francois Muller seeking appointment as "administrateur general de la loterie" noting that the post remains vacant and renewing an earlier request. Muller frames his appeal in terms of loyalty and usefulness adding that he would prefer to return to active military service stating that he would rather fight the Emperor's enemies than remain inactive. Muller was implicated in the circle of General Moreau suppressed in 1804 as part of opposition to Napoleon. He was subsequently placed under house arrest at Orleans where he remained until his death in 1808. The present letter is an attempt by a compromised officer to secure reinstatement through patronage while affirming continued allegiance. . Good. Soft cover. 1st Edition. 1st Printing. 1804. original letter paperback

First Edition, 4to (260 x 205 mm), [2], 72pp., large paper copy, with an additional portrait of the author engraved by John Collyers, title-page printed in red and black, added engraved title depicting Neptune with trident framed by scenes of the celebrations, large folding engraved plan of the table layout along the quay, one further engraved plate, contemporary crimson morocco-backed boards, original pink printed label on upper cover, spine rubbed and joints cracked. A festival to celebrate the fall of Napoleon I, April 1814. a vivid account of the 'grand festival' in Great Yarmouth was written by Robert Cory, a local businessman and the builder of a suspension bridge across the River Yare which collapsed in 1845 with considerable loss of life. Inclusively was again the order of the day, and on a larger scale than at Cambridge: over 9,000 people were fed at fifty-eight tables stretched along the waterfront. An afternoon of feasting, donkey-racing and a 'pig hunt' culminated in the burning of a vast, symbolic bonfire representing the 'Funeral Pile of the Buonapartean Dynasty'. Despite concerns prompted by the participation of 'the lowest order of society', everything passed off peacefully. Even the weather obliged: the drizzle stopped five minutes before dinner was served.
