The earliest fully-fledged publication by William Burges. Iconography was to play a very important part in his architectural oeuvre - both ecclesiastical secular. This ephemeral work launched Burges as an architectural scholar. I sheds considerable light on his aesthetic ideals during his formative years. After studying the Doge's Palace in Venice he paid a visit to the young Paris gothic revivalist Adolphe-Napoleon Didron. Didron made a similar study of th Doge's Palace and agreed to publish Burges study with the proviso that his ow notes on the Doge's Palace be included along with illustrations. It is a virulent pamphlet directed against Napoleon himself circulated by one of his best-known opponents: General Jean Sarrazin 1770-1848 who had defected to the enemy on 10 June 1810 having himself conveyed aboard an English brig by a fishing boat from Boulogne. Full red blind-stamped cloth binding smooth spine decorated with gilt fillets gilt initials at the foot of the spine discolouration marks to the spine blue paper endleaves and pastedowns. Foxing. Work illustrated with a portrait of General Kléber as frontispiece. Sentenced to death in absentia by the Lille court-martial on 15 November 1810 Jean Sarrazin was only able to return to France on 23 April 1814 during the First Restoration. Still an attractive binding of this piece of Napoleonana. Thought to be written by Baron Antoine-Henri Jomini. Jomini is considered a father of modern military strategy and was the only author of strategy taught at West Point before the Civil War. E anche resoconto del viaggio con cui il pontefice Pio VII (1800-23) si recò in Francia; vengono accuratamente descritti i dettagli della partenza, gli approvvigionamenti, il clero al seguito. L’itinerario, suddiviso in Fogli, si snoda da Roma a Modena, Milano, fino a Parigi e rientro passando per Firenze, Perugia, Foligno.
