182523292London: Printed for Henry Colburn 1825. First edition. Hardcover. Very good condition. A work describing the illness and death of Emperor Napoleon by Francois Carlo Antommarchi 1780 - 1838 an Italian physician who served as Napoleon's physician from 1818 to his death in 1821. Antommarchi performed an autopsy the day after Napoleon's death; controversy concerning the cause of death lingered for years.

Antommarchi was one of a series of doctors who treated Napoleon on St. Helena sent there in 1819 by Napoleon's uncle. Napoleon rejected many of their treatments; he appears to have suffered from a variety of ailments. A 2007 study by American Swiss and Canadian researchers using modern methods and accounts such as Antommarchi's came to the conclusion that the cause of death was an advanced case of gastric cancer.

Two volumes with Signet Library gilt embossed stamp at front covers.

8vo Vol I: viii 416pp. Vol II: 286pp; ads 2pp. Tan calf raised bands at spine. Rebacked with the original labels laid down; new end papers. OCLC: 4273460. Printed for Henry Colburn hardcover
18082501Buenos Ayres: Imprenta Niños Expositos 1808. About very good. 3pp. on a small quarto bifolium. Removed from a sammelband with later manuscript pagination at top edge. Some separation along gutter from top edge; minor loss at lower inner corner. Light toning and soiling. An interesting publication from the Niños Espósitos press in Buenos Aires announcing the invasion of Spain by Napoleon in 1808. The text comprises a letter from Spanish authorities in Galicia to the Viceroy of Rio de la Plata Santiago de Liniers informing him of state of war exists between France and Spain and introducing him to Joaquin Somoza de Monsoriu the captain of the frigate charged with bearing the news of the situation in Spain to South America. The missive goes on to say the Somoza has been charged with returning to Spain with royal funds from the Viceroyalty to aid in the war effort and continues to solicit financial aid and military volunteers from the residents of the Rio de la Plata. Scarce OCLC locates copies in only four U.S. institutions.
Furlong 1196. Medina Rio de la Plata 438. Palau 199605. Imprenta Niños Expositos unknown
1870List36104New York City: Sarony 680 Broadway 1870. Albumen print on original mount with printed studio imprint. 2 ½ x 4 inches. Very good condition; strong tonal contrast. Studio portrait of Grace Greenwood 1823–1904 the pen name of Sara Jane Clarke Lippincott: journalist poet lecturer and one of the most widely read women writers of the nineteenth century. Greenwood was a committed abolitionist contributing to antislavery newspapers including the National Anti-Slavery Standard and using her national platform to denounce slavery and support the Union cause. During the Civil War she reported from Washington D.C. advocating emancipation and commenting directly on federal policy. Her writings and lectures frequently addressed women’s legal and political inequality and she became an outspoken supporter of woman suffrage. Greenwood also traveled in Europe as a foreign correspondent publishing travel narratives and political commentary. A popular public lecturer she addressed audiences across the United States on reform literature and women’s advancement becoming one of the era’s most visible female voices.

Offered here is a portrait of Greenwood taken by Broadway photographer Napoleon Sarony. The photograph shows Greenwood later in her career posed thoughtfully with her head resting upon her hand a book held in the other—a studio convention of the period used to convey authority. Sarony’s 680 Broadway studio was known for photographing leading literary and theatrical figures; this example situates Greenwood among the cultural elite of post–Civil War New York. We find no other examples of this portrait in commerce. Sarony, 680 Broadway unknown

We found very little online about the author other than a note on a preserved page in the Library of Congress's Chronicling America from the May 29 1920 issue of the Kansas City Sun reporting that Napoleon Paul Dudley formerly of The Call would now represent the Domestic Medical Society of Chicago Illinois.
