1804003843original letter. NAPOLEON I; MULLER Francois 1764-1808. Autograph letter signed to Napoleon I undated but post-1804. 1 sheet written in brown ink. Addressed to "Sa Majeste l'Empereur des Francais". Contemporary or near-contemporary note at foot identifying the writer as "le gal. de division Muller" with Paris address rue du faubourg St Honore. Creased from folding edges chipped with small losses and light soiling but text clear and fully legible. About good. A petition from General Francois Muller seeking appointment as "administrateur general de la loterie" noting that the post remains vacant and renewing an earlier request. Muller frames his appeal in terms of loyalty and usefulness adding that he would prefer to return to active military service stating that he would rather fight the Emperor's enemies than remain inactive. Muller was implicated in the circle of General Moreau suppressed in 1804 as part of opposition to Napoleon. He was subsequently placed under house arrest at Orleans where he remained until his death in 1808. The present letter is an attempt by a compromised officer to secure reinstatement through patronage while affirming continued allegiance. . Good. Soft cover. 1st Edition. 1st Printing. 1804. original letter paperback

Fair on lightly-aged paper with minor traces of previous mounting at head and a light and unobtrusive water stain. The letter is headed by Rose 'Y.M.C.A. B.A.P.O.2 B.E.F. France'. Regarding Sheppard's recently-published 'Quest of Ledgar Dunstan' Rose writes: 'You have a wonderfully keen mental eye which sees everything with extraordinary sharpness & you have a literary hand which etches with just & delicate touch. The book is also one of singular intensity of feeling which carries the reader along fascinated & thrilled. The mad-house scenes are like Dostoievsky for pathetic vividness & power.' Rose continues with a detailed analysis of Sheppard's 'rvery remarkable book' and literary talents before reporting that he is 'out here for six months giving talks on the war & its issues to the troops every night'. He returns to Cambridge on 8 October 'for a very dull Term'. He regrets that he is 'out of touch with the literary papers' but will be pleased to be of service. The letter ends: 'Remember me to your brother whom I have not seen for long.' A postscript reads: 'By the way suitable Y.M.C.A. workers are badly needed out in France.' 180084Palace of the Republic 16 Pluviôse An IX 4 February 1801 at the latest. French Terror Egyptian plague This letter is an important document from the French occupation of Egypt written in the aftermath of one of the outbreaks of plague which devastated the country between 1799 and 1801. It is in the hand of the chief surgeon of the French oriental army Dominique Jean Larrey 1766-1842 is addressed directly to Napoleon Bonaparte and has also been signed and further initialled by Bonaparte in the left margin. Larrey's letter is the covering note for a petition from Antoine Guirard administrator in chief of the Egyptian quarantine stations. Larrey asks Napoleon to assent to the petition and remove Guirard from the list of émigrés on the watchlists instituted by the revolutionary Reign of Terror citing Guirard's support for two orphans whose mother had died of the plague as evidence of his moral fibre. Guirard is identified as the head of the quarantine station at Bulaq in the republican almanac of An VIII. A Jacques François Antoine Guirard is named as an émigré from the Départment of the Var in the republican lists preserved at the French National Archives. If Guirard had hoped to return to France his inclusion on the watchlists may have endangered him. Bonaparte's added note reads: 'J'envoye au Ministère de la police pour me faire un rapport dans le 9 Ventôse an 10. Le 1er Consul Bonaparte' 'I am sending to the Minister of Police for him to make me a report; on 9th Ventôse Year X Bonaparte'. The quarantine stations Fr. lazarets which Guirard administered were integral to the system of healthcare that the French developed in the Middle East and are commemorated in Antoine-Jean Gros's famous painting Bonaparte Visits the Plague Victims of Jaffa. In his memoirs Larrey describes the great station on the island of al-Rawda in the middle of the Nile where patients were kept in cells made of reeds to avoid contaminating one another. Napoleon's army also imposed strict protocols for dealing with outbreaks in Egypt's cities involving sealing off whole streets and quarters when plague was detected. These practices were heavily criticized by the contemporary chronicler Abd al-Rahman al-Jabarti who lamented how families were unable to bury the bodies of their loved ones with due ceremony in fear of retaliatory punishment. Letter 340 x 225 mm laid down on card framed and glazed with verre églomisé border. Original annotations in the left margin red sealing wax to centre ink stamp dated Ventôse 14 to right margin contemporary handwritten transcription on lined paper pasted to rear of frame. Frame a little chipped letter creased when folded edges somewhat worn leaf toned inks oxidized. Very good. unknown
