His father served in the Napoleonic army where he became obsessed with Egyptian religion and myth. Upon his return to France in 1815 he founded a freemasonry lodge called the Pilgrims of Memphis but the chapter was disbanded only one year later. He entrusted the archives to his son who reformed and revived the charter in 1839 but his small group of pilgrims failed to receive dispensation from the freemasonry governing body the Grand Orient of France. In 1859 Marconis applied again to the Grand Orient for masonic chapterhood and it was finally granted. This book represents the final iteration of the foundation of the Rite of Memphis a project that took over 40 years to come to fruition.
OCLC locates no copies in U.S. libraries.
Caillet 7116; Dorbon 689. the Author unknown

192140New York: Del Rey; Ballantine Books 1976 1977. Another galaxy another time First hardback edition signed by the ghostwriter Alan Dean Foster on the title page which solely credits George Lucas. This novelization of Star Wars: A New Hope was originally published as a paperback five months prior to the release of the film in May 1977 and represented the world's first encounter with a long-form story from the galaxy far far away. This copy is from the book club edition published in July 1977 and preceding the first trade hardback edition of November. This copy has the printer's date code "S27" in the gutter of the final page as required for the first printing. Foster's version is "perhaps most notable for allowing its readers to experience the interiority of characters from the film. Although the film establishes Leia's willingness to shoot the stormtroopers the novelization allows its readers to imagine the consequences of her act more vividly by narrating the stormtrooper's thoughts and aspirations" Webster p. 51. It also includes colour photographs from the film with captioned explanations of the Star Wars universe presciently described as images that "may become a milestone in the space fantasy genre" facing p. 42. The front panel of the dust jacket was designed by the lead poster designer for the original trilogy John Berkey and the rear panel gives credit for the film. The novelization includes several key details omitted from the finished film but later retconned into the series including Palpatine p. 1 the Sith p. 7 and perhaps most infamously a medal for Chewbacca p. 183. By contrast the most famous opening line in film is here given as "Another galaxy another time". Octavo. With 16 pp. of colour photographic illustrations printed on black paper stock with accompanying text. Original grey boards spine lettered in blue fore edge untrimmed. With dust jacket. Spine ends and corners bumped cockling to pastedowns; jacket spine flaps and verso browned unclipped: a very good copy in like jacket. Jeremy W. He attended Humboldt University of Berlin. He studied history, philology, and geography. He published his first geographical work, with Carl Ritter, in 1840, titled Atlas von Hellas und den hellenischen Kolonien. The atlas focused on ancient Greece. In 1848 his Historisch-geographischer Atlas der alten Welt was published. In 1854, his atlas, Atlas antiquus was released. It was translated into five languages. Neuer Handatlas über alle Teile der Erde was first published in 1855. In 1877 his Lehrbuch der alten Geographie was published, and in 1879 Leitfaden der alten Geographie, which was translated into English (A Manual of Ancient Geography, 1881) and into French. IT WAS CREATED IN RESPONSE TO JIM CROW LAWS THAT REMAINED IN FORCE IN WESTERN PENNSYLVANIA AND ELSEWHERE. THIS SCARCE PRIMARY SOURCE MATERIAL DOCUMENTS THE NEEDS OF AFRICAN AMERICAN BUSINESS OWNERS TO UNITE IN ORDER TO SURVIVE.

Our charter shows that the "Negro Licensed Beverage Association of Western Pennsylvania" NLBAWP was a group of African American hotel owners restaurant owners and tavern owners. Lingering Jim Crow laws and other societal forces made it exceptionally difficult for such businesses to succeed in the Pittsburgh area and of course elsewhere. The late 1950s and early 1960s saw the development of similar organizations in Philadelphia National Negro Licensed Beverage Association and New Orleans Negro Tavern Owners Association.

Importantly this document lists the goals of the NLBAWP organization:

"To foster strengthen and improve business within the Negro community."
"To advance the cause of the Negro tavern and hotel owner as a whole."
"To give service to members to do things for them which they cannot do for themselves or which can be done better or less expensively if done collectively."
"To create and project the proper image of a tavern or hotel owner in the community."
"To sponsor aid and assist any charitable or civic project approved by the members."

One noteworthy incorporator listed here was Vivian Mason Lane. Lane owned four Pittsburgh taverns in the 1960s and was a community leader through at least the 1980s. She led a neighborhood Chamber of Commerce and ran unsuccessfully for County Commissioner and the State House.

The 1966-67 Negro Traveler's Green Book "For Vacation Without Aggravation!" lists a grand total of eight suitable motels tourist homes and restaurants in Pittsburgh. In any event we have been unable to determine what -- if anything -- became of the Negro Licensed Beverage Association of Western Pennsylvania. Shields, Watson & Washington, Attorneys at Law unknown

1890196721890. Barrows Isabel C. ed. First Mohonk Conference on the Negro Question Held at Lake Mohonk Ulster County New York June 4 5 6 1890 1890 records one of the earliest organized national discussions among white reformers politicians and intellectuals addressing the status of African Americans in the decades following Reconstruction. Convened at a moment when Black political rights were being systematically dismantled across the South through disenfranchisement and violence the conference brought together predominantly white Northern and Southern participants to debate labor education and civil status. The proceedings include the intervention of Reconstruction advocate Albion W. Tourgée whose address "The Negro's View of the Race Problem" directly challenged the exclusion of Black voices and concluded with a proposed resolution that failed to gain support. Statements within the conference reflect prevailing racial barriers including the observation that in Philadelphia "a colored man may carry mortar up a ladder but he is not allowed to lay the bricks" underscoring systemic exclusion from skilled labor and economic advancement.

Barrows Isabel C. ed. First Mohonk Conference on the Negro Question Held at Lake Mohonk Ulster County New York June 4 5 6 1890. Boston: Geo. H. Ellis 1890. Softcover pamphlet format 142 pages measuring approximately 24 cm. Original front cover preserved and laid in with a color facsimile wrapper supplied for protection. Text printed as conference proceedings compiling speeches discussions and resolutions delivered across the three-day meeting.

Produced during the consolidation of Jim Crow policies and the retreat from Reconstruction-era protections this document provides direct evidence of how white-led reform movements framed and debated Black citizenship at the national level. The absence of substantive Black participation alongside Tourgée's protest highlights tensions between advocacy and paternalism within late nineteenth-century reform discourse. As a printed record of policy-oriented discussion the volume supports research into labor exclusion education policy and the ideological foundations of segregation-era governance. Minor staining to lower margins; otherwise very good condition. unknown
