Cardinal Mazarin was an Italian Catholic prelate diplomat and politician who served as the chief minister to the Kings of France Louis XIII and Louis XIV from 1642 to his death. He was made a cardinal in 1641. His role as educator of King Louis XIV began on Louis'8th birthday and lasted until the Cardinals'death.</p><p>No other copies seen at auction since 1969. In-4, broché, couverture papier ancien d’attente, 8 p. Édition originale et unique de cette "lettre" composée par Cyrano de Bergerac à l'occasion de l'assassinat du duc Tancrède de Rohan, âgé de 18 ans, par des mazarinistes quelques semaines auparavant lors d'une embuscade dans le bois de Vincennes. Cette mazarinade est distinguée "de toutes les autres" par la critique. D'abord parce que l'auteur revient sur la question de la légitimité de la naissance de Tancrède, notoirement problématique, alors que le parlement avait interdit à ce dernier de porter le nom des Rohan. Mais surtout, car Madame de Rohan y est placée sur un piédestal, que son protestantisme est désigné comme "Christianisme purifié" (p. 7), qualificatif scandaleux dans la France de son temps, ce qui conforte les hypothèses des biographes de Cyrano quant à sa paternité et sa probable appartenance au protestantisme. Il décrit ce général comme impitoyable. De Campion s'attacha au duc de Beaufort. Compromis en 1643 avec le duc de Beaufort dans le complot contre la vie de Mazarin au cours de la Cabale des Importants, il quitta la France pendant quatre ans, puis se rapprocha un peu plus du duc de Longueville, avec lequel il rentra en grâce en France et fit, avec le titre de colonel, la campagne de 1651 à 1654 en Lorraine et en Picardie. À la suite de cette campagne, il se retira dans ses terres de Bosc Féret au Thuit-de-l'Oison et y écrivit ses Mémoires. Cet ouvrage intéressa le public si bien qu'en 1807,cette nouvelle édition originale fut publiée & annotée par le Général de GRIMOARD

Copia apocrifa delle Memorie della contessa Marie Mancini e della sorella Hortense, ristampata anche nel 1705 e nel 1706. Maria Mancini (Roma, 1639-Pisa, 1715) era figlia di Geronima Mazzarino sorella del cardinale. Fu portata alla corte di Francia con le sorelle ed il fratello divenendo amante di Luigi XIV. Il cardinale Mazzarino pero' si oppose alla loro relazione e lei dovette sposare nel 1661 il principe Lorenzo Onofrio Colonna dal quale presto si separo' per fuggire in Francia con la sorella Hortense. Il Re la fece rinchiudere in un monastero da dove evase per condurre una vita di traversie e vagabondaggi. Questa autobiografia racconta la battaglia per il diritto femminile a conquistarsi l'indipendenza descrivendo gioie e dolori delle vite delle due sorelle. Paideia. vol. 34, p. 52.

Titre en rouge et noir. Petit manque de cuir dans le caisson supérieur, coins un peu émoussés, légère brunissure en bord de la page de titre et de quelques premières pages, corps de l'ouvrage en bon état. Deux ex-libris, l'un gravé aux armes de Charles Corbeau de Saint Albin surmonté de la devise "Nil nisi virtute" (rien sans courage), l'autre de Robert Taussat, historien aveyronnais contemporain. L'auteur de l'ouvrage reste anonyme, bien qu'ayant parfois été attribué à Antoine Aubery, historien. Rare édition originale.

Later wrappers are chipped soiled and nearly detached; contents are somewhat toned but generally this is a reasonably nice copy of this pamphlet that was part of the pamphleteering that accompanied the civil wars in France in the middle of the 17th century. Contemporary material by Mazarine is rare in commerce. Though issued in a couple of printings one with an the imprint: "A Paris: Chez la Veufue François Targa" there are relatively few institutions reporting ownership according to OCLC. Moreau suggests that this appeared shortly before Prince Condé's arrest based on context within the text. Moreau 2534. unknown

FONDO DI MAGAZZINO: VOLUMI PERFETTI E INTONSI A cinque anni dalla scomparsa, amici e allievi di Marcello Gigante hanno voluto raccogliere i suoi scritti, apparsi in varie sedi nell'arco di oltre un cinquantennio, sulla poesia greca e latina, che Gigante considerava come aspetti inscindibili di un'unica civiltà. Accanto agli affreschi sulla cultura letteraria antica dalla Magna Grecia alla Campania, quel Mezzogiorno d'italia dove Gigante aveva le sue radici alle quali è rimasto sempre profondamente legato, i volumi comprendono saggi di ampio respiro e lavori più puntuali su molti temi e autori della letteratura greca, da Omero, Esiodo, i lirici fino agli Epigrammatisti della Corona di Meleagro, e latina, da Ennio, Catullo, Virgilio, Orazio fino a Ovidio. La silloge consente di seguire l'evoluzione spirituale dell'autore, uno dei più insigni filologi classici del Novecento, che ha praticato la filologia come disciplina storica, in cui l'analisi del documento è unita a quella del monumento "a spiegare un fenomeno di un'epoca determinata". Nei due volumi si possono anche ripercorrere le tappe più significative della cultura classica negli ultimi sessanta anni: i congressi omerici a Itaca, le grandi celebrazioni per i bimillenari virgiliano e oraziano, le "Festschriften" e le "Denkschriften" per studiosi illustri.
