Rappelons que Jules Ferry, chef du gouvernement et fervent partisan du colonialisme, fait voter des crédits pour assurer la sécurité des français au Tonkin dès juillet 1891. L'expédition du Tonkin s'en suivit donc et finira par aboutir au protectorat, suites à plusieurs traités et notamment celui de Tianjin, avec la Chine, en juin 1885. Toutefois, l'affaire du Tonkin avait entrainé la chute de Ferry. L'ouvrage est divisé en différentes parties : avant la conquête, les ressources du Tonkin, le climat, ce qu'a coûté l'expédition. First edition of this scarce and nicely printed D.M. Ferry Seed Co. catalogue featuring excellent chromolith insert of Puritan Cauliflower. This catalogue was issued almost two decades after the devastating 1886 New Year’s Day fire reflected the business acumen of Ferry and growth to be one of the largest seed companies in the United States by the Progressive Era. This catalogue offers a wide range of seeds from Abobra to Zinnia’s and the company pioneered selling seeds in small packages labeled and illustrated and maintained 160000 outlets by 1890.
