Historiated initials.<br /> <br /> This Apache novel "Le coureur des bois" was published under the pseudonym Gabriel Ferry Graf Louis de Bellmare in 1850. A German translation by Füllner followed in 1851 but it took the edited German version by Julius Hoffmann to gain popularity in Germany. Illustrated with 66 lithographs by Max Slevogt nine of them full page. Rümann 20a. Schauer II 84. First edition with this sequence of illustrations. Text in German Gothic script. Some wear along edges of binding; covers rubbed with spine lightly frayed at head and tail of spine small closed tears at front joint. Spine foxed and sunned.
