The two items are on variations of the revolutionary letterhead of the Prefect of the Drôme Department with oval medallion illustration of a seated liberty with a phrygian cap on a stick forearm leaning on the fasces and the words ‘Libérté’ and ‘Égalité’. The printed decree is in good condition lightly aged with slight foxing and discoloration. The secretarial letter is in fair condition with darker patches of discoloration. ONE: Eighteen-line official communication in a secretarial hand from ‘ Préfet du Département de la Drome / Au maire de la Commune de propiac’ ‘sur les points limitatifs du territoire et sur l’étendue du secrétaire’. Addressing the mayor as ‘Citoyen’ and signed ‘Marie D’escorches’ note the apostrophe. 2pp 4to. TWO: Printed decree from ‘LE PRÉFET du Département de la Drome/ Aux Ecclésiastiques et aux ci-devant Religieuses du Département’. 2pp 4to on first leaf of bifolium. Signed in type ‘MARIE DESCORCHES’. A Jean-Jacques Isle de Beauchaine (1747-ap.1792), officier de marine. Il annonce au chevalier Isle qu'il sera chargé par le roi, au printemps, afin d'avoir « une connaissance particulière de la Barre de Bayonne et des travaux que le département de la Guerre continue à faire exécuter dans cette partie ». Il est certain qu'Isle accomplira cette mission comme il se doit. Les travaux de la Barre de Bayonne étaient prévus dès 1738. La BnF conserve un plan des travaux envisagés. Le but était de redresser et resserrer le lit de l'Adour afin d'éviter la formation de bancs de sable et rendre la navigation sur l'Adour plus aisée. [338]

Il doit donc visiter une série de ports et faire des rapports le plus objectifs possibles, « dégagés de tout ce que l'intérêt personnel cherchera à vous suggérer ». Intéressant courrier montrant l'importance de la marine royale sous Louis XVI. [338]

Engraved frontispiece of the Agnus Scythicus pp 138 very clean internally the hinge at the frontispiece crackig but no weakness bound in a ater unlettered cloth-backed marbled boards rubbed and chipped at the edges but otherwise sound. RARE. The Vegetable Lamb of Tartary Latin: Agnus scythicus or Planta Tartarica Barometz is a legendary zoophyte of Central Asia once believed to grow sheep as its fruit. It was believed the sheep were connected to the plant by an umbilical cord and grazed the land around the plant. When all accessible foliage was gone both the plant and sheep died. Underlying the legend is the cotton plant which was unknown in Northern Europe before the Norman conquest of Sicily. The Hunt Library Catalogue - Number 474 - devotes four pages to the earlier printings of this work - "One of the most curious little books in the Collection or even in the demesne of bibliography". This copy has an article bound in at the rear entitled Botany; it has 127 pages is probably late-Victorian and I have not traced its source. First Edition. Cloth-backed boards. Good. S.
