1837011315Edinburgi / Edinburgh Scotland: Privately Published 1837 There is a label inside the front cover for "The Sinclair Collection. Heraldic Genealogical and Antiquarian Books and Manuscripts which belonged to the Late ALEXANDER SINCLAIR ESQ. and now deposited in the Library at Crawford Priory Fife N.B." Below the label is the signature of Robert Pitcairn W.S. July 27 1838. Robert Pitcairn 1793-1855 was a writer to the signet and in 1833 published a three volume set titled "Trials and Other Proceedings in Matters Criminal Before the High Court of Justice in Scotland" which Sir Walter Scott latched onto. After Scott read one of the narratives in Pitcairn's 'Criminal Trials' he was inspired to write his 'Ayrshire Tragedy'. The two remained friends with Scott reviewing an early portion of the set in the 'Quarterly Review' for 1831. The National Library of Scotland holds 10 Letters from Sir Walter Scott addressed to Robert Pitcairn W.S. Pitcairn was also a member of of the Society of Antiquaries in Scotland and part of the group around James Maidment in the Bannatyne Club. There is also a small book label for A.B.W. MacEwen of Maine a Scottish medieval genealogist. He also researched the genealogy of the families of Prince Edward Island for which he received an Award. He published widely in American and British journals of history and genealogy considered the greatest scholar of medieval Scottish genealogy and was bestowed with an honorary membership in The Foundation for Medieval Genealogy. 8 xlviii 4 xxiv 476pp xl printed on heavy laid paper deckled page edges bound in half cloth and paper over boards with the paper spine label intact binding and hinges tight occasional pencil annotations with plates throughout and a double page map in back.
