1822H29705London: A. J. Valpy 1822. Wraps. Very good. Disbound pamphlet from "The Pamphleteer" a compilation of various pamphlets speeches articles and letters published quarterly and with uncirculated stock bound up at the end of each year and issued as an annual volume. This is actually three different pamphlets with three title pages with continuous pagination from p. 303-355; the middle pamphlet is a stated third edition. The consensus seems to be that the first and third pamphlets are by Samuel Butler and the middle one the letter to the Bishop of Bristol is by James Henry Monk. A scheme was passed in 1822 for an annual honours examination in classics to which those who had obtained honours in the Senate House Examination were to be admissible. This was a limited concession only since the candidate for classical honours had first to win mathematical honours while there was no similar condition the other way but the foundation of the Classical Tripos does mark an important broadening of the field of study. In the same year a scheme for a Previous Examination was passed which provided that in their fifth term men should pass an examination in the Greek Testament Paley's Evidences and a Greek and a Latin author though the standard was elementary. The general academic level was rising all round. The mathematical curriculum was deepened and extended; the tests for medical degrees were made more stringent; the evils of non-residence and inefficiency among the professoriate were gradually removed. In 1809 Monk was elected Regius Professor of Greek in succession to Porson. The establishment of the classical tripos at Cambridge was in great measure due to his efforts. In 1822 he was appointed Dean of Peterborough. Very good short tear to front page minor expert strengthening along spine. A. J. Valpy unknown
1927WRCLIT30971London: The Grayhound Press 1927. Printed wrappers. Quarto. Covers a bit grubby three-inch split along the spine with a half-inch loss of paper from the bottom edge short tear to lower cover near head of spine but internally very nice with the prospectus laid in. First edition of the Irish poet's third book one of 460 numbered copies printed in France on Arches. The Le Doux illustrations are accompanied by a disclaimer emphasizing their tenuous relation with the text. The Grayhound Press unknown books
