A bright and well inked image of the entrance to the inner sanctum of the headquarters of the Knights of the Order of St. John. Now within central London St. John's Gate was built in 1504 and served as the south entrance to the inner precinct of Clerkenwell Priory the English headquarters of the Knights of the Order of St John. Over the years having served many uses notably from 1701 to 1709 the building was the childhood home of the painter William Hogarth. The artist's father Richard Hogarth opened a coffee house on the premises in 1703. Known as "Hogarth's Coffee House" the establishment offered Latin lessons together with coffee a fine coupling. unknown
