8vo. 356p. + Curious illustrations. Spine faded. W121
pp. 2 [Publisher's catalogue], (2) [Title and copyright pages], 500 + 18 full page steel engravings. printed on yellow paper. Text foxed. Early autograph ownership of William Hay. 12mo. 175 mm. Original red embossed patterned cloth binding. Spine lettered in gold gilt. Hardbound. Very good. The publisher, Calvin Blanchard (1808-1868), had a disreputable reputation. At his shop on Nassau Street 'you could buy all kinds of books that your minister would frown upon - whether for free thought or for obscenity made little difference to this unsavoury Calvin.' Boccaccio is seen as not terribly erotic these days, but in the era before the Civil War it was considered 'stimulating' and 'saucy'. SCARCE. EROS 2 / York DC16
Two Volumes bound in one: pp. 310; 307 + Full Page Illustrations by Leopold Flameng. Uncut and unopened. Front hinge cracked. 200mm. Original worn full cloth binding. Spine faded. Original paper spine label faded. This is the edition that, in 1894, drew the fire of the New York Society for the Suppression of Vice and the U.S. Treasury Dept. Judge O'Brien, in allowing its distribution as an immortal classic of world literature, said, "a book that is merely obscene soon dies." CLASSICS BX 1
Two Volumes. pp. Frontis, Engraved Title, XVI (lacks 2 leaves in this section - apparently blanks), 611, [1]; Engraved Title, 493, [3] + Engraved frontis portrait of Boccaccio. Both title pages are fully engraved, each with a vignette showing Cupid sharing tales with Boccaccio as women wait on the veranda of a house in the background. Italian text. 8vo. 205 mm. Wide margined; uncut; deckle edges. Some slight age stain. Old tape repair at frontis hinge. No front free fly-leaf. Early vellum backed marbled boards binding. An attractive (if mis-leading) edition. The Decameron is a collection of novellas by Italian author Giovanni Boccaccio (1313-1375). It is a 14th-century medieval allegory told as a frame story encompassing 100 tales by ten young people. Boccaccio probably began composing the work in 1350, and finished it in 1351 or 1353. The bawdy tales of love in The Decameron range from the erotic to the tragic. Tales of wit, practical jokes, and life lessons contribute to the mosaic. In addition to its literary import, it documents life in 14th-century Italy - From Wiki. A false imprint - Because of its sometimes erotic nature, printers and publishers were often loathe to claim the Decameron as their own. Therefore 'Amsterdamo' appears in the imprint of this edition. It was not printed in Amsterdam, but almost certainly in Venice, by Antonio Locatelli. There are several similar, but different editions. They are identified by examination of the occasional ornaments and a notice at the very end of volume two, which in our example reads: "Si Vende Lire Venti Venete." (Sell this for 20 pounds). No priority noted for the variants. W118

Dark blue octavo in black DJ, 264 pages ; 23 cm. Inscribed and signed by author. || Clergy -- Sexual behavior -- Fiction. || Archbishop Mark Doyle, a church reformer and a martial arts expert, falls wildly in love with his therapist, Miriam Faberini. Their love affair would be enough to complicate a celibate bishop's life, but his troubles multiply when two of his priests are murdered. A clandestine Catholic group claims responsibility for both killings, and vows to eliminate Doyle as a symbol of corrupt liberalism. The Vatican demands that Doyle account for damaging allegations against him. His shadowy nemesis, a priest defrocked for sexually abusing teenage boys, dogs the Archbishop's every step. His story displays key tensions agitating the still medieval structures of today's church.
