Original red embossed patterned cloth binding. Spine lettered in gold gilt. Hardbound. Very good. The publisher, Calvin Blanchard (1808-1868), had a disreputable reputation. At his shop on Nassau Street 'you could buy all kinds of books that your minister would frown upon - whether for free thought or for obscenity made little difference to this unsavoury Calvin.' Boccaccio is seen as not terribly erotic these days, but in the era before the Civil War it was considered 'stimulating' and 'saucy'. SCARCE. EROS 2 / York DC16

Mary Anne Thompson Clarke (1776-1852) became the mistress of Prince Frederick Augustus (1763-1827) Duke of York in 1803, while he was Commander-in-Chief of British forces. He set her up in a fashionable residence, but failed to supply the funds necessary to support their lavish lifestyle. In 1809, a national scandal arose when Clarke testified before the House of Commons that she had sold army commissions with the Duke of York's knowledge. Frederick was forced to resign from his position. A select committee was appointed by the British House of Commons to enquire into the matter. The parliament eventually acquitted the Duke of having received bribes by 278 votes to 196. He nevertheless resigned because of the high tally against him. In 1811, after it was revealed that Clarke had received payment from the Duke's disgraced chief accuser, Gwyllym Lloyd Wardle (1762?-1833), the Prince Regent reappointed the now exonerated Duke of York as commander-in-chief. **PRICE JUST REDUCED! Paperback white octavo with green and blue illustration on front cover. xviii, 464 pages, 17cm. Translated by Alec Brown. || "Originally published in two volumes as Vie du Marquis de Sade" || "The product of many years of careful research, during which the author was allowed access by the Marquis' descendants to a wealth of Correspondence and unpublished manuscripts, Gilbert Lely's biography does much to dispel the mists of legend and to re-create the life of one of the most remarkable men of recorded history. While clearly and meticulously following the facts of Sade's life and the increasing sexual obsessions that defined them, the book also shows how those very obsessions and drives translated themselves into the form of some of the most lucid, compelling, and significant prose ever written." -back cover.
