Agli inizi del 1300 i poemi omerici erano praticamente sconosciuti (anche a Dante Alighieri)_ Binduccio senese ne fornì una versione in volgare attraverso il poema epico francese Roman de Troye: il racconto della guerra di Troia occupa solo una parte del libro, che dedica invece largo spazio, tra una battaglia e l'altra, alle storie d'amore e alle digressioni di carattere mitologico. Il volume è corredato da ampie note di commento e da un glossario dei termini più desueti.

La figura di Giovanni Manna (1813-1865) è stata spesso confinata dalla storiografia nella dimensione del grande amministativista (il "Romagnosi dell'Italia Meridionale"); ovvero collocata all'interno di una corrente di un pensiero "autonomista", assai debolmente unitaria. Appaiono invece dimenticati - e non solo per la morte precoce - l'ampio respiro liberale della sua cultura e la qualità del suo impegno politico (fu Ministro nel '48, nel '60, e poi tra il 1862 e il '64 nel ministero Farini-Minghetti, allorché provò a ridare forza al progetto cavourriano). Questa sotto valutazione non è stata casuale. Da un lato la sua riflessione politica, maturata dopo l'esperienza quarantottesca, era approdata ad un disegno che fondava su una lunga transizione in grado di garantire la coesione territoriale della nuova nazione: smentendo il diffuso presupposto di un'omogeneità del paese resa incerta solo dal malgoverno borbonico. Un'idea che, messa in crisi prima dalla rapidità inaspettata degli eventi del '60, si scontrò successivamente con la volontà piemontese di estendere a tutto il paese le istituzioni amministrative delle antiche province. Quel disegno, dall'altro lato, concepito come una nuova storia nazionale cui avrebbero dovuto contribuire paritariamente tutte le parti del paese, si svolgeva nel quadro di un liberalismo economico e politico ampio e corrispondente ai tempi di quella "rivoluzione commerciale" che aveva rappresentato lo sfondo e la vera cifra degli avvenimenti unitari.
