'It's ten years since Odysseus and the warrior, Eperitus, joined the heroes of the age to compete for the hand of Helen of Sparta. Settled in his small island kingdom, Odysseus wants nothing more than to rule Ithaca in peace. Meanwhile Eperitus, frustrated at his quiet life, dreams of glory in battle. When the lion-motifed sails of Agamemnon appear on the horizon, Odysseus knows that the time for peace is over and a time of war is beginning. Helen of Sparta has been abducted by a prince of Troy and the hosts of ancient Greece are gathering. As the greatest names flock to join the crusade, only Achilles is missing. Odysseus must use all his wits and cunning to hunt him down and persuade him to join their cause. For without Achilles, the gates of Troy will never fall. Book

In spring 1945, the Red Army entered Berlin. Not far from the Reichs Chancellery was the Berlin Zoo with an anti-aircraft tower. Inside were crates containing Heinrich Schliemann's famed collection of gold from the lost city of Troy, King Priam's riches - gold diadems with leaf and flower pendants, gold bottles, gold earrings and 9000 gold rings and buttons - one of the most complete and valuable finds ever made by an archaeologist. On June 3rd the crates were despatched to Moscow by military aircraft. And there they and their contents vanished. Caroline Moorehead has spent two years searching for the treasures of Troy. She tells the full story of where they have been for the past 49 years.306p + plates, notes bibliograohy index.S Book
" In Schliemann of Troy, classicist David Traill investigates the archaeologist's own legends, and argues convincingly that Schliemann regularly distorted facts in both his personal and professional lives. Basing his biography on a thorough reexamination of the vast collection of Schliemann papers in Athens and including many previously unpublished excerpts from his letters and diaries, Traill demonstrates that his subject was a remarkably unscrupulous and untruthful individual. At once a gripping portrait of a duplicitous man and a reinterpretation of some of the greatest archaeological discoveries of all time, Schliemann of Troy shakes the dust off of the Schliemann corpus and rewrites one of history's most exciting chapters.365p+ Plares, maps, notes, plans, bibliography, index Book

"The Trojan War is the most famous conflict in history, the subject of Homer"s Iliad, one of the cornerstones of Western literature. Although many readers know that this literary masterwork is based on actual events, there is disagreement about how much of Homer"s tale is true. Drawing on recent archeological research, historian and classicist Barry Strauss explains what really happened in Troy more than 3,000 years ago.For many years it was thought that Troy was an insignificant place that never had a chance against the Greek warriors who laid siege and overwhelmed the city. In the old view, the conflict was decided by duels between champions on the plain of Troy. Today we know that Troy was indeed a large and prosperous city, just as Homer said. The Trojans themselves were not Greeks but vassals of the powerful Hittite Empire to the east in modern-day Turkey, and they probably spoke a Hittite-related language called Luwian. The Trojan War was most likely the culmination of a long feud over power, wealth, and honor in western Turkey and the offshore islands. The war itself was mainly a low-intensity conflict, a series of raids on neighboring towns and lands. It seems unlikely that there was ever a siege of Troy; rather some sort of trick -- perhaps involving a wooden horse -- allowed the Greeks to take the city.Strauss shows us where Homer nods, and sometimes exaggerates and distorts, as well. He puts the Trojan War into the context of its time, explaining the strategies and tactics that both sides used, and compares the war to contemporary battles elsewhere in the eastern Mediterranean. With his vivid reconstructions of the conflict and his insights into the famous characters and events of Homer's great epic, Strauss masterfully tells the story of the fall of Troy as history without losing the poetry and grandeur that continue to draw readers to this ancient tale. 258p. index New except for remainder mark Book

"The author, a noted geoarchaeologist who has done extensive investigative fieldwork in landscapes of Bronze Age Greece and has recently excavated at Tiryns, goes to the source of the Atlantis legend, two of Plato's dialogs. Zangger examines these accounts in great detail, accepts them as historically based, and presents evidence for identifying Bronze Age Troy as the most likely site of "Atlantis" 256p. illus. maps. bibliography .index Book

GUIDA EDITORI 2001 360 PP.
