198184081Frederick MD: Aletheia Books University Publications of America 1981. First Edition. Octavo. 26cm. Publisher's heavy grain blue cloth titled in gilt to spine and front board. Dustjacket. xvii; 589pp. Minor wear and scuffing to spine ends and corners strong and solid; internally clean illustrated throughout; In a clean and bright dustjacket that is perhaps 3mm too short for the book whether this was a publication issue or it has at some point been very professionally trimmed is unclear. A very good clean copy indeed.

An unmistakeably important dense and highly detailed history of the history and development of the CIA from it's earliest days; from its post WW2 emergence out of the melting pot of the OSS via input from such peculiar and unexpected sources as Ian Fleming and Roald Dahl through to its present day ubiquity in all the shadowy corners of American endeavor. 198153608Washington DC: CIA 1981. 2nd/Unclass Edition. First Printing. good. Quarto 589 wraps illus. fold-out chart appendices notes bibliography index some wear and soiling to covers. The first edition was published in a very limited two-volume edition in 1975 by the CIA's Center for the Study of Intelligence. This declassified edition has been re-edited and shorn of more than six typewritten pages of material and has been printed in one volume. By a veteran CIA official this will probably remain the definitive account of its subject. Going backto the founding of the Office of Strategic Services during WWII and culminating with the creation of the CIA by Executive Order in 1947 the author covers all feasible sources in his effort to delineate the climate of opinion in Washington which very gradually led to the generally conceded need for an American intelligence-gathering headquarters. CIA paperback
