Three lives will change the destiny of nations: Helikaon, the young prince of Dardania, haunted by a scarred and traumatic childhood; the priestess Andromache, whose fiery spirit and fierce independence threatens the might of kings; and the legendary warrior Argurios, cloaked in loneliness and driven only by thoughts of revenge. In Troy they find a city torn apart by destructive rivalries . a maelstrom of jealousy, deceit and murderous treachery. And beyond its fabled walls blood-hungry enemies eye its riches and plot its downfall. It is a time of bravery and betrayal; a time of bloodshed and fear; a time for heroes. Book

Provenance: “Bagio†inscription on front pastedown; Ex fondatione Giorgii --- illegible ownership inscription on title.

Unrecorded edition of a popular verse account of the fall of Troy. Part of the “prehistory of the Italian romance epic†Everson the Trojan tale circulated in several versions during the late medieval period. Like the other Italian versions this anonymous poem in 20 cantos in ottava rima may have been loosely based on the 13th-century Latin prose narrative Historia Troiana by Guido delle Colonne. Both poems emphasize Rome’s Trojan lineage. The earliest recorded edition of this version dates to 1483 GW 12519 1 extant copy an inconvenient fact for a later attribution to the poet Jacopo di Carlo who was in fact the printer of the 1491 edition.

In the sixteenth century the educated classes enjoyed the tale which was sometimes even read in schools. The spread of literacy stimulated the production of cheaper chapbook editions like this one thriftily printed in very small types with repeated impressions of the woodblocks of battle scenes. The larger title cut printed from a worn block which is missing part of the border shows a small skirmish of soldiers in medieval armor.

Editions appeared throughout the 17th century mainly in Venice but also in Padua and Verona. Together ICCU and OCLC list thirteen 16th and 17th century editions from 1562 to 1671 NOT including this one. All are rare. Fine Very Good English Original bdg. Dust wrapper. 4to. (34 x 24 cm). In Turkish. 438 p., color and b/w ills. Troia hazineleri. It has been some 140 years now that actual finds from the ancient city of Troy-that city near the Dardanelles-that Troia around which was spun the famed epic of Homer's Illiad-appeared to accompany and magnify the myth. The finds unearthed there-many representing buried treasures-are today widely scattered, with principal groups, however, now found housed in only (!) eight different museums. The goal of this work is to bring the individual pieces together, to verify their common origin, to consider their purpose, and to place them into an accurate chronological perspective-not only within the strata of the site itself, but throughout the Bronze Age world that helped create them. These objects demonstrate how developed the aesthetic sensibilities of our ancestors living some 4500 years ago really were, and how highly developed the craft of their goldsmiths was at the time. Geographical patterns of influence as well as the import of semiprecious stones and other raw materials stress the far-reaching trade and significance of the Trojans. A very heavy volume.
