Front cover is heavily soiled and abraded at the bottom near the spine with damage to the cover chromolithograph; binding is generally rubbed; early 20th century gift inscription on the front free endpaper; finger soiling and toning throughout but primarily to the first third of the book; three full page chromolithographs are very nice only one has minimal finger soiling to the margin. Uncommon with beautiful chromolithographs and numerous in-text illustrations throughout by Wetherbee Ford and Speed. DeWolfe and Fiske Company unknown

Typical for Lang's edited collections the work to adapt and translate these stories has primarily been accomplished by women with whom he worked duly credited in the preface though not the title page. This is a gorgeous copy of a title highly sought for its pictorial cloth binding. 7.25'' x 4.75''. Original blue pictorial cloth elaborately stamped in gilt. All edges gilt black coated endpapers. Illustrated in black and white throughout by various artists including tissue-guarded frontispiece by H.J. Ford. One page of ads at rear. xvi 337 3 pages. It survived in a unique and incomplete manuscript in the Cambridge library. The text was edited by the librarian of Durham Cathedral Joseph Stevenson and published by the Maitland Club an association dedicated to the promotion of Scottish literature and culture. 28 cm; xxiv 185 pages. Bound in contemporary red half morocco over pebbled boards edged with gilt rules . Spine decorated and titled in gilt. Marbled endleaves. Moderate wear especially at extremities with spine chipped a bit at heel. Two labels removed from pastedowns.
