Signed and inscribed at length by the author on the facing page to a well-respected Oregon poet "For Henry Hughes on the occasion of his successful defense of his Ph.D dissertation 1 March 2002 West Lafayette Indiana. One of the best dissertations I've seen at Purdue University by one of our very best candidates for the doctorate degree. Good times abounded. Dick Thompson." Also signed beneath his name ont he title page in purple ink. Overall the book is in good only ex-library condition. general wear at the edges and light corner bumps. Creasing at some pages and library stamps including "Withdrawn" as appropriate and pocket removal. 254 pp. indexed a scarce book at best even rarer signed by the author. <br/><br/> University Of Wisconsin Press hardcover

196 p. Some light age stain. Small 8vo. 175 mm. Original full cloth binding, decorated in gold and black. Covers soiled. What a title! Exclamation Point, Exclamation Point, Exclamation Point. all without an explanation or even a &. Rev. George Hughes Hepworth (1833-1902) was an interesting character. He was Chaplain of 47th Massachusetts Volunteers for three months, then became 1st Lt of 76th Regiment of US Colored Troops, staying in the Army until 1869 when he went as preacher to the Church of the Messiah. From 1872-1879 he was at the Church of the Disciples. He then went to Switzerland and Germany for his health. Around this time he developed a relationship with Charles Woodcock (Savage). In Germany Woodcock developed a intimate (homosexual) relationship with King Karl of Germany. Hepworth was drawn into the scandal that followed but never fully accused of homosexuality. Set on the path of author and journalist he published many articles and books, Hepworth was the New York Herald's Supervising Editor from March 1885 to the summer of 1892. In 1897 he went to Anatolia and stayed through the winter. Out of this trip came his most famous work: 'Through Armenia on Horseback' (1898). SCARCE. OCCULT 12

pp. [x], 186. + Fourteen double-page folding lithographed plates. 12mo. Original blind-stamped cloth binding, with a gold window arch on the front board. Some slight chipping at binding extremities. First published in 1849, this important essay on architecture helped establish the Victorian taste for Gothic design. According to Ruskin, the leading principles of architecture are the "lamps" of Sacrifice, Truth, Power, Beauty, Life, Memory, and Obedience. He found the noblest style of architecture to be Gothic, but in time medieval architecture lost its power. He felt that this loss of vitality was the result of the spiritual decline of Christianity during the Renaissance. The essay greatly influenced Victorian art and design and flavored the tastes of generations. **PRICE JUST REDUCED! W138
