Capolavori noti e meno noti in tutta Europa, lungo quattro fasi precise, vengono illustrati da Duby ponendo in parallelo senza vincoli rigidi gli avvenimenti storici e sociali e quelli artistici. La diffusione della nuova spiritualità cristiana permea anche le creazioni artistiche che svolgono funzioni assai diverse da quelle moderne. La bellezza e la ricercatezza dei materiali erano innanzitutto offerta e ringraziamento a Dio, come una sorta di sacrificio a lui dedicato. Questa considerazione aiuta a comprendere le altre due funzioni predominanti nell'arte medievale: da un lato la mediazione fra realtà terrena, e mondo spirituale; dall'altro l'esaltazione del potere e della potenza divini e anche di coloro che li amministravano in terra. Nel racconto affascinante di Georges Duby l'arte come specchio della società medievale. In una società fortemente gerarchizzata, che attribuiva all'invisibile una realtà analoga al visibile e un potere ancora maggiore, e non riteneva che la morte mettesse fine al destino individuale, monumenti, oggetti e immagini svolgevano un'importante funzione.
