The first edition of this work complete in three volumes.This picaresque romance of Persian life was written after author James Maurier retired from his diplomatic career in Iran.The novel is satirical with a negative undertone following a likeable rogue who gets himself into various adventures in a series of disguises. The work drew heavily on Morier's personal knowledge of Persia and its people which he had acquired from the British embassy staff at Tehran. The novel widely influenced English ideas of Persia and its Persian translation even led to the development of the modern Persian novel of social criticism.Rebound with endpapers renewed. Bound without half titles.with the bookplate of Sir Gore Ouseley 1st Baronet loosely inserted in each volume. He was a British entrepreneur linguist and diplomat who negotiated an important treaty between Russia and Persia in 1813 which redrew their common borders.Morier was noted for these novels about the Iran Qajar dynasty. 'The Adventures of Hajji Baba' was later made into an American adventure film in 1954. Rebound in quarter calf bindings with marbled paper covered boards. Endpapers renewed. Externally fine. Bookplates loosely inserted to each volume. Internally firmly bound. Pages of volumes I and III bright and generally clean with the odd spot to the first and last few leaves and throughout. An unusual copy with seven lithographs to volume II. Seven plates to volume II which is unusual as no illustrated editions of this work have been recorded. The plates resemble the style of the author's own illustrations as he was an amateur sketch artist. These sketches suggest an amandoned intention to issue an illustrated edition of this work. Bound without the half-titles. James Justinian Morier was a renowned British diplomat and author who entered the diplomatic service through the influence of his uncle Admiral William Waldegrave1st Baron Radstock. First visiting Iran in 1808 as secretary to Sir Harford Jones-Brydges Morier had an extensive career in the country and wrote several travel works of his experiences that were widely popular. This picaresque romance of Persian life was written after Morier retired from his diplomatic career in Iran. Atabey's collation calls for a half-title in the first work though this is lacking in the copy there described as well as the present copy and is not mentioned in Abbey's collation. 'In retirement Morier pursued the writing career which was far more to his taste than diplomacy and on which he had already made a start. His two travel books A Journey through Persia Armenia and Asia Minor 1812 and A Second Journey 1818 both met with critical acclaim and were welcomed by a public which knew little of these areas' ODNB.
