An edition of the Institutes by Cujas with extensive commentary and notes by Jean Lacoste Theodore Marcile and Marc-Antoine Muret. These jurists who followed Cujas' example were leaders of the French humanistic school which aimed to purge Roman sources of later corruptions. Their pioneering methods did much to establish the field of philology. Compiled around 161 CE the Institutes is an elementary treatise on Roman private law that served as a standard text for 300 years.
