Minor scratches to front wrap else Fine ; 0.77 x 8.5 x 5.46 Inches; 320 pages; The papers collected in this volume present a systematic survey of the struggles of Athens, Sparta and Thebes to dominate Greece in the fourth century - only to be overwhelmed by the newly emerging Macedonian kingdom of Philip II. Additionally, the situation of Greeks in Sicily, Italy and Asia is portrayed, showing the geographical and political diffusion of the Greeks in a broader historical context. Siatista is in Northern Greece where it borders on Albania,Bulgaria and Yugoslavia and consequently it's history reflects all the different powers and cultures, languages and religions that have flowed through the Balkans - from the Macedonian empire of Philip and Alexander the Great through Roman, Byzantine and Ottoman rulers to the modern Greek state. The author describes the resilience of the people, the successful merchants of the 18th C. who traded across Europe and the Ottoman Empire, how they survived many regime changes, revolutions and wars and still retained their Greek language and Orthodoxy and promoted education. He describes the strong family and community bonds, and the local customs and festivals which still support their social solidarity. 201+10 pages, illus, bibliography Book
