This alliance was formalized in a treaty, the document which provides the corpus for this study. In this treaty is a list of "divine witnesses", which comprise the "official pantheon" of Carthage. The organization of the material and the presentation of the god-lists of all the treaties in a series of charts in Appendix I as well as the extensive indexes and bibliography make the book a useful reference work. Any further treatment of West Semitic pantheons will have to take this study seriously and all who are interested in Near Eastern religion will consult this work with great profit. ; The Johns Hopkins Near Eastern Studies; 10.5 x 0.75 x 7.25 Inches; 236 pages

The excavator's suggestion that the tomb's occupant was probably Philip, son of Amyntas, king of the Macedonians and Captain General of the united Greeks, created an understandable sensation, and aroused world-wide interest in this extraordinary personality: father of Alexander the Great, one of the greatest Macedonian kings, and also one of the most important political figures of antiquity. In response to this interest nine scholars, all eminent specialists in the history of 4th century Greece, describe the tumultuous career of Philip, re-evaluate his personality and re-examine his political achievements in the light of the recent discoveries. The book closes with an account of the excavation of the fabulous treasures of the royal tombs at Vergina by Professor Andronicos. ; 254 pages

"The death of Tito and the disintegration of Yugoslavia in the 1990s shattered the Balkans, unleashing all the horror of extreme nationalism. Macedonia seemed to have been spared the blood-letting. In reality, it was only postponed Macedonia remains a powder-keg waiting to explode.A bloody rebellion by Albanian guerrillas demanding equal rights to the dominant Slavs in Macedonia has killed and wounded hundreds of people, many of them innocent civilians, and set off fears that the crisis would suck in surrounding Kosovo, Albania, Bulgaria and Greece. International intervention brought an uneasy halt to the internecine blood-letting in the summer of 2001, but hardline Macedonian nationalists, including some under investigation by the international war crimes tribunal at The Hague, have hindered full implementation of the peace agreement signed in August of that year. There are fears that the National Liberation Army will renew its campaign, and that this will set the stage for more ethnic cleansing in the heart of Europe. John Phillips has covered both the fighting on the front line in Tetovo and other cities as well as the behind-the-scenes diplomatic intrigue in Skopje. A journalist and historian by training, he shows, in frightening detail, just now dangerous the instability in Macedonia is for any hope of a lasting peace in the Balkans. This book will be vital reading for all those interested in the state of the world today and in the Europe of tomorrow." 230p. bibliography.index Book
