Bifolium separated at the fold. Large dampstain to the top of the front cover affecting throughout foxing throughout and edgewear a complete but good only copy. For voice and piano. Plate number 3253 and on the front cover a six pointed star with a 3 in the center. This piece is a bit of an enigma as we cannot confirm the true identity of the composer nor that of the mysteriously named Thatch Cottage Bard. Unrecorded by OCLC and thus the plot thickens. No owner name but someone a juvenile has written large page numbers next to the printed page numbers. Otherwise no internal markings. Well-read and worn to spine; strong and sound. Minor marks to covers. Overall a good copy of a very rare book. xii 135 pages. RICHARD WATSON was born in Middleton in Teesdale. He attended the Lead mining school from the age of six where is ability with words was spotted. When Richard was 10 his father fell ill and Richard had to leave school and start his career in the lead mining industry. Watson who was hailed as the Teesdale Bard was poor most of his life but he received useful sums now and then and was regularly treated at dinners and other functions where he sang a few songs and recited his verses. He died October 2nd 1891 at Edinburgh Royal Infirmary after suffering an accident at work on Holwick Hall. He is buried at St Mary The Virgin Churchyard Middleton-in-Teesdale County Durham England. HIS GRACE STONE: In Loving Memory of RICHARD WATSON THE BARD OF TEESDALE BORN 16TH MARCH 1833 DIED 2ND OCTOBER 1891. Beginning to lose her sight at the age of 14 she became completely blind by her late twenties. Her first prose work the current "The Fatal Secret" was initially written in pencil and practically unreadable but soon after she acquired and became proficient in the newly-invented typewriter which she would use throughout her entire literary life. The Bard of the Berkshires Bodman 1766-1850 was perhaps the last great efflorescence of the New England Puritan poets in the lineage of Michael Wigglesworth; Bodman's four poems here include a piece "On the Great Mortality of the Women and Children in Williamsburgh in 1788" when six women and five infants died in childbirth: "Six mothers are departed hence! / Their consorts left in great suspense / Which way to go whither to run; / Nor can they their sore troubles shun."
