1859579125Boston: Oliver Ditson & Co 1859. Softcover. Good. First edition. Front cover lithograph by Gillingham. Folio. Single bifolium with a single sheet insert making six pages. Bifolium separated at the fold. Large dampstain to the top of the front cover affecting throughout foxing throughout and edgewear a complete but good only copy. For voice and piano. Plate number 3253 and on the front cover a six pointed star with a 3 in the center. This piece is a bit of an enigma as we cannot confirm the true identity of the composer nor that of the mysteriously named Thatch Cottage Bard. Unrecorded by OCLC and thus the plot thickens. Ida Glenwood pen name for Cynthia Roberts Gorton 1826 - 1894 was a blind poet author and temperance lecturer. Beginning to lose her sight at the age of 14 she became completely blind by her late twenties. Her first prose work the current "The Fatal Secret" was initially written in pencil and practically unreadable but soon after she acquired and became proficient in the newly-invented typewriter which she would use throughout her entire literary life. Ephraim George Squier June 17 1821 - April 17 1888 was a noted archaeologist history writer painter and newspaper editor. His description of travel to Mosquitia Nicaragua and Honduras includes chapters on history of area as well as information about mosquitos and has a Brief Vocabulary of the Mosquito Indians at pp. 366-369. There are appendices on historical sketch of the Mosquito Shore notes on topography soil climate and natives and the vocabulary of the Mosquito language.
