The comparative analysis of numerous individual passages deals initially with Virgil and his Greek role models and then shows similar sections from Roman literature. Frommann-9783772815065frommann-holzboog Verlag e.K. Latin German. Hardcover. New. 647 p. 179 x 245 cm. Books 6 und 7 of the Poetics conclude the edition of the text and the translation. The subject of the 6th book Hypercriticus is much like the fifth Latin poetry and its goal is to give the budding poet examples which are worthy of imitation. There is a division into five eras: from the beginnings and Roman classicism to the decline during the Empire and late antiquity and then the revival after Petrarch. The normative judgmental aspect predominates which means that a historical approach as it is taken today was not yet possible. Of great significance is the 4th chapter which contains an overview of modern Latin poetry. The short 7th book provides a number of addenda to the preceding books as the title Epinomis appendix indicates. frommann-holzboog Verlag e.K. hardcover

180517929Paris 1805. 8vo. Allais Contemporary half red morocco and marbled paper sides gold-tooled spine and brown sprinkled edges. With 6 engraved plates including 3 folding designed by Redouté and Barraband and executed by Bouquet. XIV 224 pp. First edition of the natural and mythological history of the ibis illustrated with beautifully engraved designs. The author Marie Jules-César Lelorgue de Savigny 1777-1851 gives an account of the black and white ibis their mythical position in ancient Egypt with the several cults that existed their natural habitat and the answer to the question whether they eat snakes and why or not. Six numbered engravings illustrate the work showing the black and white ibis close-ups from the beak and leg and some ancient illustrations. H.J. Redouté and Barraband designed the illustrations. Both were extraordinary good artists and probably two of the greatest illustrators of natural history of all time. We only know Redouté as such because Barraband died rather young. However by that time he had already made beautiful ornithological illustrations for Levaillant's works on parrots and birds of paradise. De Savigny's Description de l'Egypte appeared during the years 1809-1830 in which he published his observations and investigations made during the military expeditions of Napoleon's army to Egypt in the years 1798-1801. The section dealing with natural history was printed in 4 volumes in 1809-1820 with plates designed by J.H. Redouté and Barraband and executed by Bouquet. The present work is a sort of "preview" of this grander project here only focussing on the ibis. With an autograph dedication by the author on the half-title and two partially damaged book plates on the front pastedown "Bibliothèque du Chateau de . = erased" and "Bibliothèque . E. Me. . = erased". The binding shows signs of wear with rubbed boards the first four leaves after the title page are trimmed short the final leaf is torn without affecting the illustration and there is some foxing and browning throughout. Otherwise in good condition.l Nissen Vogelbücher 819; Ronsil 2718; not in Anker. hardcover

Cathcart died en route however and this seems to sum up Ibbetson's luck; soon after his elegant views of Bath had been aquatinted and published by Hassell his wife died. He had already suffered the loss of eight children and this latest tragedy brought on an attack of brain fever. After he recovered from this he found that he had been robbed by his servants; this led him to seek escape in a life of dissipation which led to penury. At the end his artistic skill enabled him to pay off his debts. The small scale of his drawings suited book illustration and his special skill as an animal and in particular cattle painter can be seen in the illustrations in this work.<br /> Abbey Scenery 38; ESTC T54291; Tooley 277. 994Northern Italy: Mint Moving with Caesar 49BCE. Elephant right trampling serpent more standing than walking like the one plated by Crawford. “CAESAR†in exergue. 4 emblems on reverse though some including Crawford have said the elephant is the rev. side. Cr. Crawford RRC 443/1. BMC British Museum Catalog Gaul 27. Kestner 3516. Exf. The first silver Caesar and the first to bear his name a military issue originally struck at the mobile mint traveling with the legions for the sole purpose of paying Caesar’s troops on the eve of crossing the Rubicon and on the march to Rome that followed commencing the civil war and assuring that no further funds would be forthcoming from the Senate. And Sear says that this coin continued to be struck once Caesar arrived in Rome and had confiscated the reserve bullion stores left in the aerarium treasury by the fleeing Pompeians 15000 bars of gold 30000 bars of silver and 7500000 denarii in cash. It was however confined to military payment as the Roman mintiers struck different denarii for civilian commerce. This is a relatively common Caesar coin but it is not so common in this condition with sharp details as well as orange yellow and red iridescence. The majority of examples of this type belong to one of two artistic designs when considering the elephant the more realistic and accurate depiction this coin and one in which the elephant has short legs and an almost pig like appearance.
