1st Separate Edition. 19th Century Boards with original paper wrappers bound inside. 8vo. 33 pages ; 21 cm. Reprinted from the Asiatic Journal. This is the first published monograph by Louis Loewe, the Jewish Silesian linguist who made major contributions to the study of Hieroglyphics and who worked as Sir Moses Montefiores secretary. Sir Moses Montefiore in his will named Loewe one of his executors, and directed that he should be entrusted with all his diaries and other private papers to enable him to undertake the task of writing a biography of Lady Montefiore. This became a biography of Sir Moses also. It was completed in June 1888, and published in 1890 as Diaries of Sir Moses and Lady Montefiore. (Wikipedia, 2017) This book includes amazing type-set illustrations of Egyptian hieroglyphics which Loewe translates into English, Greek, and Hebrew. OCLC lists 8 copies worldwide, and no copies in the United States. Ex-library with Institutional Stamp. Inscribed by the author on the front wrapper. Boards are worn. Some edgewear, with one corner folded. A few damp stains. Overall in good condition. (BR-11-52)
