Nicolas Sanson 1600-1667 began to make maps to supplement his study of history and a map of Ancient Gaul made early in his career brought him to the attention of Cardinal Richelieu. This foothold in the French court allowed him to rise to the position of geographe du roi teaching both Louis XIII and Louis XIV. Louis XIII even made him a counsellor of state. Sanson produced an atlas 'Cartes Generales de Toutes les Parties du Monde' which contained important maps of the post roads and waterways of France. He also produced two major maps of North America: 'Amerique Septentrionale' 1650 was the first map to show the Great Lakes in a recognisable form aided by Sanson's access to The Jesuit Relations a collection of accounts by French missionaries to the area. The map was drawn on a sinusoidal projection which Sanson was the first to use. In 1656 he made 'Le Canada ou Nouvelle France' which showed the Great Lakes in greater detail and included accurate representations of the Hudson Bay area the Delaware and the Gulf of Saint Lawrence. chez l'autheur, unknown

Highlighting the capital city of Sinope this map depicts the region as defined by Strabo: bound by the Parthenius River in the west extending to the Hays river in the east. Sanson depicts the region comprising the Kingdom of Pontus during the rule of Mithridates IV. Neighboring historical regions of Gallatia and Bithynia et Pontus are labeled. Full original margins light scattered foxing. Based on earlier plates by Sanson. This map appeared in "Atlas Antiquus Sacer Ecclesiasticus et Profanus" published in Amsterdam by Pieter Mortier. <br> <br> Nicolas Sanson 1600-1667 who is considered the founder of the French school of cartography. In reaction to the prevailing trend of Dutch lavishness Sanson favored minimal details focusing rather on accurate cartography than ornament. <br> Pierre Mortier 1661-1711 was a Dutch cartographer engraver and printseller who worked in Amsterdam. He used advanced Dutch printing methods to produce high quality editions of contemporary French maps by cartographers such as De L'Isle Sanson Jaillot de Fer and De Wit. His greatest feat was the nautical atlas "Le Neptune Francois" or "Suite de Neptune Francois" considered to contain the most beautiful examples of cartographic art. After his death his widow Amelia continued publishing in partnership with her brother-in-law David until her death in 1719. Engraved Size 17.5 x 23 inches Nicolas Sanson 1600-1667 sometimes called Nicolas Sanson d'Abbeville or Sanson d'Abbeville was the most important French cartographer of the 17th century. Tooley called Sanson "the founder of the French school of cartography." He began making maps in the late 1620s and in the 1630s he was working with Melchior Tavernier. Later Sanson worked in concert with the print publisher Pierre Mariette with whom he published his great atlas: Cartes générales de toutes les parties du monde 1658. After Sanson's death in 1667 his son Guillaume carried on the business in partnership with Alexis Hubert Jaillot. Guillaume established himself as a very important French mapmaker in his own right. Attractive small map showing North America with California as an Island California is shown with an indented northern coastline in the Foxe form. The detached coastline to the northwest of California is named Terre de Iesso ou Ieco rather than reflecting Sanson's earlier belief that it was an extension of the American continent. The R. de Nort drains into the Gulf of California from a large interior lake in the country of Les Apaches. The two western-most Great Lakes are left open-ended and Lake Erie remains unnamed. Engraved by Antoine d'Winter. This is the third state which includes a peninsula inserted northeast of California the Carolinas attributed to the French N. Iork added below N. Amstredam and an umlaut over the "Roy" in the title. This map appeared in Algemeene Weereld-Beschryving nae de Rechte Verdeeling der Landschappen Plaetsen Zeeën Rivieren &c. The plates were later sold to Francois Halma who used them in 1699 and then again in 1705 with the titles re-engraved in Dutch. A stunning map of Normandy by Alexis Jaillot an exceptional example with gilt embellishments.<br/> <br/> One of the most important figures in French cartography Nicolas Sanson initiated the great school of French geographers. Born in Abbeville in 1600 Sanson established his first printing house in Paris in 1638. He soon became geographer to the king establishing himself as one of the most influential cartographers on the Continent. He was succeeded by his sons Adrien and Guillaume and by his son-in-law Pierre Duval who continued to publish a wealth of maps using Sanson's name. At the close of the seventeenth century Sanson's plates were purchased by the influential cartographer Alexis Hubert Jaillot who continued to publish his maps and atlases under Sanson's title. This stunning map of Normandy is based on Sanson's map published in 1650 but was redrawn and enlarged by Jaillot. It shows the provinces of Normandy as well as the northern tip of Brittany and part of the English Channel. Both Jersey and Guernsey are included as is Mont St. Michel off the coast of St. Malo. In keeping with all of Sanson's and Jaillot's superb maps forests rivers and towns are meticulously identified and named. De Boulé et Comp. for Ledoyen Original green wrappers in a protective plastic wrapper with a large lithographed plate on the front showing a dirigible flying over the globe underneath a floating angel who is blowing a trumpet with the motto "Conquête de l'aire". With a large folding lithographed plate 40 x 235 cm of the dirigible and a smaller woodcut of the same dirigible on p. 5. 31 1 blank pp. First edition of this very rare early and remarkable brochure on navigation in the air and the dirigible manoeuvrable balloon. The brochure introduces a new project to build a dirigible in the shape of a fish. The cost was estimated at 30.000 francs and was to be financed by the issue of 300 shares of 100 francs. The work explains the expected profits and the workings of the dirigible in order to entice patrons. It is an early example of such a project as the first powered and steerable airship that was able to take flight was invented in 1852 eleven years after the publication of the present work. This curious brochure therefore offers a fascinating insight into the history of aviation.The fish dirigible is shown in detail on the large folding plate. It was proposed to ascend the balloon being in equilibrium by means of wings to obtain propulsion by four small paddle-wheels and to steer by means of a large triangular rudder. It was approximately 25 meters long and 12 meters high and operated from a basket hanging underneath like in a hot air balloon. It was invented by bookseller and author Alexandre-Jacques Sanson 1789-1862 and his father. The dirigible was never built but the Sansons nevertheless published a number of other works elaborating on the same subject in the following years: Navigation atmosphérique. Explications complémentaires sur le système 1845; Explication du système de navigation aérienne 1848 and Solution du problème de la navigation aérienne principes preuves et moyens 1850. The present work ends with a letter by the aeronaut Jules-François Dupuis-Delcourt 1802-1864 giving permission to use some of his data in the brochure and offering his blessing to the project.The wrappers are somewhat creased with tears at the head and foot of the spine.
