With twelve plates to volume I of The History of the Arts and forty plates to volume II totalling fifty-two plates. Collated volumes I-III of The History of The Arts is complete. The second edition of The History of the Arts. The Roman History From The Foundation of Rome to the Battle of Actium is the third edition of this work. Volumes VI-X are by Mr Crevier as a continuation of Rollin's work. Lacking volume V of The Roman History and therefore an incomplete set of this work. With twenty-three plates across the present volumes of The Roman History. Collation unavailable for this work although title page states that the volumes are illustrated with 'maps and copper-plates'. There are no maps to the nine volumes present and therefore it is possible that there are plates lacking. Both sets of works are translated into English from the original French. Charles Rollin was a French historian and educator. In full calf bindings with gilt stamping to the spine labels. Externally generally smart with patches of rubbing to the boards and to the head and tail of spines. Bumping to the extremities. Loss to the head of spine to arts volume I. Small loss to the head and tail of spine to Arts volume II. Split to spine of volume III of Arts may result in a split to the binding which is weak at the split in spine. Loss to the head of spine to Arts vol III. Crack to head of front joint to volume I of History resulting in the hinge being slightly strained but firm. Prior owner's small notation to the first page of vol one of History. Loss to the head of spine to volume II of History. Loss to the head and tail of spine to vols III and IV of History. Loss to the tail of spine to volume VI of History. Crack to the head of rear joint to volume VI of History. Front hinge to vol II of History is slightly strained but firm. Front hinge to volume VIII of History is strained but firm. Front hinge to volume IX of History is slightly strained but firm. Rear hinge to volume VIII of History is tender with cords showing. Front hinge to vol IV of History is slightly strained but firm. Crack to rear joint of vol X of History and some loss to the calf at the board. Loss to the tail of spine to vol X of History. Tear to front pastedown of volume VIII to History resulting in slight loss. Heavy loss to the rear pastedown of volume VIII. Internally all volumes are generally firmly bound. Only volume with problems to binding is aforementioned volume III of Arts which is weak at the split in the spine otherwise volume is firmly bound. Pages are slightly age toned with the odd spots throughout. Slightly heavier spotting to the outer margin of page 281 to vol I of History not affecting the text. Beautiful copy of this teaching manual printed on large paper and bound for the Duke of Orleans Louis Philippe 1725-1785 the French prince and member of the House of Bourbon the royal dynasty that ruled France. Charles Rollin was a French historian and educator. Born in Paris Rollin was made a master in the CollÃ¨ge du Plessis at the age of 22. In 1694 he was made rector of the University of Paris where among other things he revived the study of Greek. He held that post for two years and was then appointed principal of the CollÃ¨ge de Beauvais in 1699. Rollin held Jansenist views and his career suffered as a result of his religious opinions disqualifying him to be elected for the rectorship a second time in 1719 and possibly the reason his election to the AcadÃ©mie FranÃ§aise was barred. In the later years of his life after he had been forbidden to teach Rollin began publishing literary works including his famous "Ancient History" published in Paris between 1730 and 1738. In the present celebrated work Rollin sought to pass down the useful lessons he learned from his long career at the University of Paris to young teachers. In the introduction he writes on the aims of teaching and a "well-rounded" education: intellectual training moral training Christian education and the development of judgment and literary and artistic taste. He includes the sciences mathematics French Greek and Latin languages poetry history and philosophy as essential subjects. This manual stays in the predominant educational tradition of the time but Rollin exhibits some interest in developing certain educational reforms considered radical at the time including studying and writing in French over the "dead languages" and using readings and examples as opposed to simple rhetorical exercises. SHE ACHIEVED GREAT SUCCESS IN LATER YEARS THROUGH HER INDUSTRY AND BUSINESS ACUMEN. Marie-Anne Guyard a.k.a. Guiard was the daughter of a wine-merchant. In 1714 after the death of her first husband Charles-Francois Pochard metal merchant she married the successful printer-publisher Jacques Estienne. Upon his death in 1731 she continued the press and publishing operations located on the rue Saint-Jacques "a la Vertu". The present 4-volume set of Rollin's teaching and study guide was followed two years later by a 16-volume set of Rollin's "Histoire romaine" 1738-1748. From 1743 onward she worked in partnership with her eldest son Jacques the Younger to whom she sold 1/3 of the business for 110000 livres according to IRHT -- a colossal sum in those days. They were joined in 1750 by her second son Robert to whom she also sold 1/3 of the business for the same amount. According to a contemporary report by 1752 she was "a very rich woman for whom M. Rollin made a fortune on account of all the works of his that she printed. Abbe Antoine Pluche also contributed. She has just bequeathed and sold her business to her son and to Bauche's son." Marie-Anne Estienne died on May 13 1753 leaving her children a large estate. As stated above her two sons became printer-publishers; two of her four daughters married printer-publishers one married a bourgeois merchant and one married Daniel Coffin conseiller du Roi. Included herein are two priced lists of "Livres nouvellement imprimes" by her the first in vol. I 5 pages the second in vol. IV 2 pages and we learn that the published price of the present edition -- unbound -- was 10 livres. OUR SET IS IN MUSEUM QUALITY CONDITION AND IS SUITABLE FOR EXHIBITION AND STUDY. With 3 engraved maps 2 engraved folding plates and 1 engraved folding plan. 13 volumes bound as 14. ca. 600 pp. per volume Lovely set in the original French of Rollin's very popular Histoire ancienne which contrary to its full title primarily describes ancient Greece the other ancient peoples are only treated in the first two volumes. It's a mixed set from three editions published by the Estienne family in nice closely matching bindings. After the first volume appeared in 1730 the series grew well beyond its initially planned five volumes and became tremendously popular appearing in numerous editions and translations well into the 19th century. Rollin organised a narrative closely based on a wide variety of ancient sources. While this copying was heavily criticized Rollin also distinguished himself with his concern for moral issues. "The prominent lens through which Rollin viewed history was that of virtue corrupted by power and this was the main approach that he tested in his Greek history. In the process moreover he carved and unprecedented space for Greek antiquity" Lianeri.The set is in very good condition with a few leaves browned and a few minor spots and stains. Marbled endpapers. Illustrated with a copper-engraved frontispiece to each volume and 14 engraved plates plans and maps some folding 22 illustrations in total. Further subsequent ownership inscription in ink manuscript to the front free endpaper of the first volume "Henrietta Skene / given to her by her Father / 8 Volumes Complete / November 16 1825" and with her name in ink to the front endpaper of each volume. A very good set the bindings square and firm with a touch of minor cracking to volumes one and eight a little occasional chipping to the spine ends light rubbing to the spines and joints some scuffs to the boards heavier to volume five and some old water marking to the top corner of the boards of several volumes. The contents with a touch of damp-marking to the upper corners of the preliminary pages of a few volumes and the occasional mark smudge or dot of foxing here and there are otherwise in very good order throughout. The plates and maps remain clean and sharp. An attractive set of the French historian Charles Rollin's monumental survey of the ancient civilisations of Europe and the Near East nicely illustrated with numerous engraved plates map and plans. An unusual and appealing set owned by an educated young woman - Louisa Pereira likely of Portuguese descent - during the age of Enlightenment with her elegant gilt morocco ownership label to the spine of each volume.
