Binding is solid and square, covers have sharp corners, exterior shows no blemishes, text/interior is clean and free of marking of any kind. 319 pages in oblong format. Softcover, 8vo, 56 pages, 28 cm. SUBJECT (S) : Biography; Government publication; National government publication. Brandeis (18561941) , was a U. S. Jurist, the first Jew to be appointed to the U. S. Supreme Court. Brandeis was born in Louisville, Kentucky, the youngest of four children of Adolph and Frederika Dembitz Brandeis. Brandeis formed a law partnership in Boston with a former classmate, and by the age of 30 he had achieved financial independence, thanks both to the success of his legal practice and to a deliberately frugal style of living. When Woodrow Wilson was elected president in 1912 on a platform of the New Freedom, he turned to Brandeis for counsel in translating ideas of political and social reform into the framework of legal institutions. In 1916 Wilson nominated Brandeis as a justice of the Supreme Court, precipitating a contest over confirmation in the Senate that lasted more than four months confirmation was finally voted on June 1, 1916 (Freund in EJ 2007) . Bel exemplaire frais et complet accompagné d'une lettre autographe originale sur double page (21,5cm x 15cm) à en-tête imprimée du Ministère des Affaires Etrangères, Cabinet du Ministre, datée de Versailles, 18 avril 1871. Jules Favre (1809-1880), alors Ministre des Affaires Etrangères, s'adresse à "Monsieur le Gouverneur", c'est-à-dire au Comte de Gueydon 1809-1886), alors Gouverneur de l'Algérie, pour lui recommander un jeune Lieutenant de Spahis, qu'il avait recueilli à l'âge de 12 ans, lorsque son père, Mohamed Bel-Hadj, Agah des Ouled Riah, avait été condamné pour son implication dans l'affaire de l'attaque de la diligence de Tlemcen-Oran, le 12 septembre 1856 dont il est question dans ce livre. On trouvera, page 296, un fac simile de lettre de Jules Favre faisant déjà allusion à ce jeune homme. Le capitaine Auguste Edouard Doineau (1823-1914) fit à nouveau parler de lui en 1874 lorsqu'il aida le Maréchal Bazaine, qu'il avait connu en Algérie, à s'évader. BEAU DOCUMENT EN PARFAIT ETAT.

Reçu avocat à Paris en 1680, il s'établit dans cette ville, où il se fit une nombreuse clientèle. Bien qu'extrêmement occupé, il s'adonna d'une façon toute particulière à l'étude du droit romain, lut tout ce que les plus habiles commentateurs avaient écrit sur ce sujet, et étudia l'esprit de ce droit, qu'il considérait comme le droit fondamental de la France, avec l'intention de trouver les moyens les plus propres à rendre la jurisprudence uniforme dans tous les tribunaux du royaume.
