Early green cloth lettered in gilt on the spine and ruled and decorated in blind on the sides; cloth slightly rubbed and bumped at the extremities and a little sunned on the spine; ink ownership stamp to two early pages; some scattered foxing generally light; a few creases marks and short tears to a few margins; overall a very good copy bound without the original wrappers. Lord Chief Justice Cockburn's twenty-day summing-up in the sensational perjury trial of the claimant to the Tichborne baronetcy Arthur Orton a butcher from Wagga Wagga also known as Thomas Castro. The last few pages record the jury's speedy verdict of guilty. The 'History' of the case is taken from the 'Daily News' 2 March 1874. <p>Provenance: F. Calendrier pour 1762 & pour le reste de la vie. Londres, s.n., 1760. In-12, [4]-192 & « Toujours à Londres, chez l'Eternel M. Jean Nourse », 1762. In-12, 119-[1]p. Edition originale des deux ouvrages. Le premier est un recueil de cinq textes sur le fameux régicide Damiens. Les trois premiers sont de Groslez. C'est surtout l'occasion d'une violente diatribe contre les jésuites. La note finale indique ces trois textes furent condamnés au feu. Le second ouvrage est un des pamphlets de Chevrier. Il fut publié alors qu'il était exilé en Hollande suite à la publication du Colporteur qui fit scandale et lui valut des poursuites. Chevrier meurt la même année. Une seconde édition sera publiée en 1763. Plein veau, dos à nerfs orné, pièces de titre (une pour chaque titre), tranches rouges. Une coiffe arasée, petites usures, un accroc à une coupe. Papier légèrement jauni. Premier ouvrage peu rogné (plusieurs feuillets aux témoins). Un feuillet du premier ouvrage, 93/94, est mal placé entre les pages 84 et 85. Bon ouvrage.

Edward Shippen (1729-1806) was a lawyer, judge, government official, and prominent figure in colonial and post-revolutionary Philadelphia. He and the other judges of the PA Supreme Court were tried for impeachment because of a 30 day jail sentence they passed on Thomas Passmore for supposed contempt of court. Politically motivated, it highlighted the real divide between Jeffersonian democrats and the Federalists in their interpretation of Common Law. Quatre procès politiques. Les deux premiers prennent place dans le contexte de la difficile installation de la Monarchie de Juillet, alors que l'agitation légitimiste et républicaine semble menacer le nouveau régime. Les affaires relatives aux troubles de l'Ouest se déroulent dans le contexte des prétentions de la Duchesse de Berry à la Régence. Le procès des vingt-sept revient sur l'insurrection républicaine de 1832 et le rôle joué par la Société des Droits de l'Homme, d'inspiration jacobine et qui réunit étudiants et ouvriers.Le populaire, qui relate le procès, est le journal fondé par Cabet en 1833 pour la diffusion des idées socialistes. Les deux dernières affaires concernent plus précisément la presse. Le procès du National, d'abord soutien du nouveau régime puispassé à l'opposition, met en cause Armand Carrel, pour un article dans lequel il a critiqué la Chambre des Pairs. Il y assure lui-même sa défense, deux ans avant de mourir des suites de son duel avec Emile de Girardin. Quant à La France, journal légitimiste, l'accusation porte sur la publication d'une correspondance et pose la question des sources des journalistes.
