95800Very Good. Single leaf folded to form four pages with list of 83 names on first two pages. Three later horizontal folds probably for filing. Has some pencil markings beside most names -- either a red "x" or an black line. Ink note at top of one of the narrow folded section on last page:Jury of 80 Men for trial of Jorden on Tuesday 28th Inst. Waterstain -- name still quite readable -- a bit wavy but covers about the right third of both leaves as folded. No information as to date or location. Looks like it probably dates sometime in first two-thirds of 19th century. Someone might be able to narrow it down -- most juror names seem common but Plesant W. Ponder probably is not. Later pencil note in unknown hand on last page: possibly Lawrence County Alabama. unknown

Russell 1639-1683 was implicated in and ultimately executed due to his supposed involvement in the Rye House Plot a plan to assassinate King Charles II and his brother and heir to the throne James Duke of York devised by a group of Whigs. Some historians believe this plot was largely fabricated by Charles II as a way to destroy the Whigs most notably Russell and Algernon Sydney 1623-1683 who were convicted and executed on the basis of flimsy evidence. 81778 January 1844; Edge hill. 12mo 3 pp. Bifolium. Good on lightly-aged and creased paper. Wood begins by recalling 'the savage bigotry and infuriate hostility of the Manchestr. Tories at the time you mention towards the liberals'. He does not think an attempt was made to put the Oath of Allegiance to those on the recipient's list. 'The lives of 6-8 men of high Character and standing in the Town were placed in jeopardy by the perjury of two Villains and they were tried at Lancaster for either Treason or Sedition. I think for the former. One of the Wretches ran away and did not appear at the Trial I was present the other named Dunn on giving his testimony in Court was convicted of Perjury and ordered into custody immedy. by the Judge & afterwards imprisoned for 2 years.' Those accused by Dunn were 'triumphantly acquitted'. Wood names the 'Revd: Jno. Griffiths a Fellow of the Old Church' as 'a leading instigator of the proceedings' against them. Wood concludes by offering 'any information' he can give 'relating to the diabolical transactions of that Period'. In his article 'Luddism and politics in northern counties' 1979 John Dinwiddy describes Wood as a 'wealthy Unitarian' and 'a member of a 'group of middle-class reformers'. The background of the trial is given in Walker's entry in the Oxford DNB: 'On 11 December 1792 . Walker's house on South Parade and the offices of the Manchester Herald were besieged by a "church and king" mob. . Manchester authorities and loyalists had bribed an Irish weaver and local radical named Thomas Dunn to give false evidence against Walker and despite failing to indict him of high treason he and nine other Manchester reformers were charged with conspiring to overthrow the king constitution and government. Walker who employed the defence of Thomas Erskine and Felix Vaughan was tried at Lancaster assizes on 2 April 1794 but he was acquitted largely on account of Dunn's perjury.' 8 January 1844; Edge hill. unknown

By George Henry Jones.

London 1824.

With 3 landscapes 2 folding plates finely lithographed by C J Hullmandel.

8vo iv344pp; half-leather marbled boards spine label "Thurtell's Trial" lightly scuffed very solid and clean throughout.

First edition.

William Weare was a solicitor of Lyon's Inn and a gambler. His killer was John Thurtell 1794–1824 a sports promoter amateur boxer a former Royal Marine officer and a son of the Mayor of Norwich. Thurtell owed Weare a gambling debt of £300 an immense sum at the time equivalent to £24500 in 20151. Thurtell believed Weare had cheated him of the money. Whatever the truth when Weare demanded payment Thurtell murdered him rather than pay up. He invited Weare to join him and his friends – Joseph Hunt a tavern landlord and William Probert a former convict and alcohol merchant – for a weekend of gambling at Probert's cottage at the site of Oaks Close off Gills Hill Lane subsequently popularly known as Murder Lane23 Radlett. On 24 October 1823 they journeyed from London in Thurtell's horse-drawn gig but Weare was killed in a dark lane just short of their destination. The gruesome and callous events created such public sensation that it attracted numerous ballads and theatre shows at the time along with comment by the essayist Babington Macaulay and the crime used variously in the work of Sir Walter Scott William Hazllitt and Robert Louis Stevenson. After the trial one of the accused was hanged and another Joseph Hunt was transported to Botany Bay Australia.

Charles Joseph Hullmandel 1789–1850 studied art and printmaking and is considered amongst the most important figures in the development of British lithography. He developed a method for reproducing gradations in tones and for creating the effect of soft color washes which enabled the reproduction of Romantic landscape paintings of the type made popular by J. M. W. Turner. Hullmandel's essay The Art of Drawing on Stone 1824 was an important handbook of lithography issued the same year as this account of the trial.
In good condition lightly aged and worn. In his introduction Taylor explains: 'The accompanying Report has been prepared under the auspices of the Office of the Governor's Legal Counsel in response to your questions: first as to whether there are substantial grounds for believing - at least in light of the criminal justice standards of today - that Sacco and Vanzetti were unfairly convicted and executed and second if so what action can now appropriately be taken. It is my conclusion that there are substantial indeed compelling grounds for believing that the Sacco and Vanzetti legal proceedings were permeated with unfairness and that a proclamation issued by you would be appropriate.'
