The "Douglas Cause" which involved claims on the estate of Duke Douglas was one of the most sensational Scottish trials of the eighteenth century. It also involved one of the greatest jurists of the eighteenth century Lord Mansfield who presided over the case. Stuart a lawyer who had been tutor to the Duke's children represented Hamilton against Douglas and distinguished himself highly but the case was decided in Douglas favor - the result according to Stuart of Lord Mansfield's gross impartiality during trial. This was a rancorous case and it attracted a great deal of public attention most of it sympathetic to Douglas. English Short-Title Catalogue 131822 T20317. unknown books
