In 1837 a mob destroyed a printing establishment in Alton Illinois that produced abolitionist tracts owned by Elijah Parish Lovejoy an important abolitionist. He was killed while trying to defend his press. For many Lovejoy was a martyr to the cause of free speech. Abolitionists said this event proved that slavery posed a danger to the liberties of all Americans. OCLC locates 11 copies in U.S. law schools. William Lincoln was a member of the Alton Bar.
